Hey all, need a little help here. I bought a lovely little Cooey/Winchester 840 in 12ga. (2-3/4 & 3") that has a 36" barrel on it. From what I have read, this is a very rare variant. I want to refinish the wood, as the finish is peeling, and was considering shortening the barrel and installing a Polychoke on the end. Any reason I shouldn't do this? Or does a 36" Cooey command some sort of premium?

A cooey is a cooey and will always be a cooey. The 36" tubes come out from time to time. If u want to hack it go ahead. Chances r the next guy to own it would cut it to

36" barrels are not too common, but not rare. I would advertise on the EE for another barrel and leave the one you have it's original length.
Another 840 barrel can be modified to fit your action.

What constitutes modifying (beyond what I have already proposed)? Also, how much would a barrel cost? Ultimately I bought this thing to use as a practice shotgun for acclimating new shooters to the recoil and general principles before they get to use my Auto 5 or SX1. I don't want to spend a whole lot achieving that end, and all work done will be by me on machines I have access to. Also, anyone know where I could find a Polychoke, or even how the damn things are installed?)

If you don't want that length of barrel, sell it and find a shorter barreled gun. It will probably cost you more than the gun to buy a polychoke and have it installed properly. Unless of course you can find someone who has a polychoke laying around who will pretty much give it away.

Well, maybe I'll throw up an ad of the EE for a Polychoke. Never know who has what languishing in a corner somewhere.

Been 40 years since I seen a poly choke installed but when I did there were all different sizes for 12 ga based on bore in the effected area and they had to be silver soldered in. Few did them without a smith

Also if you are talking youth here as new shooters this is not the gun to get them started. The recoil will be enough they will quit before ever wanting to try your semi's.

Not so much for youth, but more for inexpericned adults. Though I would think a recoil pad and those low noise, low recoil rounds should be sufficient for a youth.

Hmm, I didn't know they came in different bore sizes. I've also heard that Polychokes were also threaded on, so that goes to show what I know. Oh well, nothing a lathe and threading bar can't fix. Hey, maybe I could even replicate one of those Cutts compensators. That would be neato.

That 36" has a beautiful pattern. Had one when I was a little younger, about 40 years ago. Hunted with it regularly. Don't wreck it! buy another.

The second version of the polychoke is threaded for the various choke tube guns. Polychoke 11 they are called. I have never seen anyone buy one of those up this way since the barrel already would have choke tubes .

Get yourself one of them thar 3-D printers and you could be just like you were in Star Trek!! You could even replicate yourself a shorter barreled gun and it would be same material as a Glock!

That would make an ideal turkey gun for somebody.

It is not an ideal gun for introducing new shooters. Too long and awkward, and too much recoil. Sell it. A better gun for new shooters is a 20 gauge gas auto.

You have a poor man's goose gun. Probably some one would be interested in it as is.
Unless you're really set on the polychoke, it might be easiest to put it up for sale or trade for what you want on EE.
I shot one as a kid, although I remember that one would open up on recoil. It wasn't my favorite gun to shoot, the 20 gauge cooey single was nicer.

Well, maybe I'll just sell and try or something else. What would a fair price range be? Also, I any of you are interested, shoot me a PM. I'll answer you guys before I post it, if you're interested.
