Cooeys - differences between models?

I bought a model 82 a few years back and it had the short stock like shown above by highoutput. I sold the gun and it ended up as a model 82 full stock. It had the flat spot on the rear of the action but did not have the peep sight nor any marks to show it was ever there.

OK

The pics were sent to me yesterday...sorry about the delay. Cool trivia, You can send photos to your photobucket via email (slow dialup here...) I just forwarded the pics instaed of actually downloading them.

No debate really...we're like detectives. Trying to peice together some "serious" Canadian history...

Yeh, if you note in the picture of my 82 full stock there is no peep sight and never was. In fact, mine still has a factory plate covering the mounting area and screw hole. And thanks a bunch to Camster for posting the pics.

Camster: what does your "Mowhawk Model 78" have stamped into it? I have a model 78 which only has "Cooey Model 78" on it. It also has a spot for the peep sight but only has the "regular" open Cooey sights.

Years ago I found an image online of both versions of the Model 78 - with both stocks shown.

Happyjack...those are gunsaholic's pictures. I just posted 'em. They should have "property of Camster" stamped on them...but I'll bet you they don'!

My 82 only has regular sights and am mounting plate with a cover where the peep sight can be installed. as you can see in my previous pictures.

Here's a simple question, when did the rabbit stock come out? Were they only for a special model or brand store (Sears or something)?

Happyjack--The one gun is only marked Cooey Mowhawk 22 cal. on the receiver. Info from John Belton's book says the Mowhawk was introduced around 1937-38 and in 1939 it became the model 75. The book also shows that in 1939 it was changed to the hump back design stock. His info isn't really that clear and not for certain how accurate. The model 600 came oiut in 1967 but I'm not sure when the rabbit stock came out. It wasn't made for Sears or Eaton's as it says Cooey on the barrel as opposed to Ranger or Sureshot which were 2 of the popular store brand names. Not to say that it wasn't also made to order for Sears or Eatons etc. with the rabbit stock but ones I have seen say Cooey. Also, just to point out, there was a "rabbit" model produced by Cooey in the late 20's. I have one and mine is a very small boy's rifle that almost looks like a toy "pop gun". It has a very flat stock and no buttplate. Mine is a smooth bore for the .22 bird shot. Although it is called "Rabbit", there is no rabbit design in the stock on it.

Rabbit Stock

In 1971 I bought a new Cooey, with the rabbit stock, from a local gunstore in B.C. Can't remember what it cost. On the subject of Cooeys, were any Model 82's sent to England ?

From what little literature there is it appears not. But who knows, we are finding out more about Cooey all the time. Maybe someone else knows for sure. One thing though, if they were sent to England, they will have British proof marks on them.
