Theres some other faint stuff i cant see. anyway let the military helmet experts comment on it if its just a common helmet or a rarer one is it worth anything? Whats the skull and crossbones about was this a coastgard helmet or Navy maby ? or just personal decal ?

Has a white number painted on the under side whats that the soldiers number ?
Its in really nice shape!

The SK prefix refers to a Regular Force serviceman's number originating in the BC Area.

Thanks thats intresting.
the Dutch guy lived in B.C most of his adult life so i asume he got it here.
Im wondering about that Skull and crossbones as thats something germans would have on there SS uniforms i think if i remember right.
Tho it could have been put on later it looks really old.

The SK number system was introduced in 1950 for Regular Force, Other Ranks, from the British Columbia Area. (Reference: p. 63 "Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army 1936-1960" Revised 2nd Edition by Clive Law (available from Service Publications in Ottawa.)

We were still being issued these WWII Mark II helmets for range work in the early 1970s.

I am not familiar with the skull and cross-bones insignia on yours. I expect that it is 1950 or later, not World War II, as unless it was a current marking, the officers would have insisted upon its removal. It is also quite possible that the marking could have been put on by a civilian after the helmet was sold surplus.

Sorry, but I think it's unlikely that skull is a legitimate Canadian military helmet marking. It looks to me like a waterslide decal, probably added to the helmet by some punks after WWII when these helmets were common surplus.

It appears the helmet was also re-painted, I can sort of see the brush marks on the outside of the shell.

Other than that, it looks like a decent helmet that is complete with liner and chinstrap.

that decal on the helmet reminds me of the free decals that used to be given away in boxes of cereals when i was much younger.

winchester 30-30/ i was a ribtors, the hardware store in calgary in the early 90's and they were selling a bunch of oddities from some obscure corner of their warehouse. they must have had about 100 or so ww2 NOS helmet shells like that for the grand price .25 or $2 each, can't remember which. at any rate, it was too much money for a struggling grad student so i never purchased any. also remember them selling tail wheels for spitfires, which were sort of like wheelbarrow wheels for about $5 each. that place had some real neat stuff there.

The CL/C is for the manufacturer - Canadian Motor-Lamp Company in Windsor Ontario. Last I heard the building is still there, although in grave disrepair and now utilized as a storage space for an adjoined company.

If I remember correctly, the re-painting was quite common when the army switched from the browner green to olive green. I have seen quite a few with the obvious brush marks.

The SS never had the "totenkamp" on their helmets.
Only SS and nation party decals, and side not front.

There would have been skulls on a visor cap, of an officer.

But never a helmet.

Not being an expert on helmets, my best observation is that you either have really big hands or that's a really small helmet! Or it's an optical illusion.. Size should be stamped on the black liner, if it's a small size possibly some kid in the 50's or 60's put the decal on it?

I don’t know much about Canadian WWII helmets---I only have one which is CL/C marked.

Mk.II Canadian helmet.
Helmet CL/C- Canadian MotorLamp Co.
Liner V.M.C.-Viceroy Manufacturing Co.
One of the liner cradle arms is marked; 6 7/8

On the inside of the rim of the helmet near the joint;

Although unlikely, it's possible the helmet was used by someone working with the Canadian "clock work mouse" submarine program in WW2 or alternately the shore support organization for HMCS Grilse or HMCS Rainbow in esquimalt. It has long been common for the submarine squadrons, including sailors posted ashore, to adorn everything imaginable with the Jolly Roger.

Could very well be the helmet was found on Vancouver island B.C so your thinking makes sence as esquimalt is not far from here.
Tho it coulda been a decal outa a craker jack box for all i know it is a very cool decal tho.
I read something on the net about the skull and crossbones used on Canadian coast gard unit helmets after WWII but i cant remember so i could be way off to thats why i posted it here i know nothing as shultz would say LOL.

David, the 40 marked on the brim of your helmet is the lot number of the steel and not the size. It's a nice helmet, enjoy.
