It's time for a new gun. My last new gun was a Mark 23 (love it).

It's time for something with a bit more kick.

I can get a coonan (NIB) for about $2400 (tax in).

I've also seen the DE 357 for about $3k (NIB).

I think I want the DE (looks super cool)

Anyone shot both with any opinions?
Not sure that cool is enough to justify the extra $$ for the DE

Note
- I have big hands so the size is not issue.
- I don't like wheel guns (blasphemous I know).

Speaking without experience, I figure the Coonan is probably the better firearm, but it doesn't have the Desert Eagle cool factor. If I had your budget, I would go Desert Eagle, because its a DESERT EAGLE, whereas the Coonan is still a 1911. I don't have small hands, but I find the controls difficult to operate on a Desert Eagle while a 1911 is much more natural to me. That doesn't matter though, cause it's a FREAKING DESERT EAGLE. I mean it's kind of a novelty gun, but there's nothing wrong with novelty.

Just my 2 cents.

Sidenote, might I ask what the Mark 23 ran you? That one's on my dream list.

If you want more kick, get a DE in 44 or 50.

If you are set for on 357, I prefer the Coonan in that calibre. Coonan will be the more reliable choice most likely.

You can always get different barrels for the DE, but going from 357 to 44 or 50 will require a different bolt in addition to the barrel and Mag.

Desert Eagle shoots more reliable with hot 357mag. I think you can tune the conan to shoot light 357 and 38spl, which the DE can't do.

Owned both, Didn't like the caliber in a pistol.

Went to a 44 DE later, sold both of them.

If you are going power, get at least the 44 DE for power and cool factor.

Mags for both won't be readily available or cheap.

DE good for hot loads only, reloads hallway between min/max won't cycle
Coonan is good for 38/358, but why shoot 38?

Grip size, DE feels more rounded and fuller, Coonan seems just longer in length.

Resale, DE better to regular shooters, Coonan mostly to experienced shooters.

Just my experience.

My advise for .357 mag: Learn to like Wheel guns. They are just fantastic in that caliber. I am also more of a semi-auto pistol guy but I have one revolver: a Smith 586. A pure joy to shoot.

Desert Eagle in .357 is a very mild shooting handgun. Can't say anything about the Coonan as I have never tried one.
