Cooper .284WIN vs .280AI

Found out that the Cooper 280AI is chambered with an older spec reamer.

I will have to fireform Nosler brass too.
Did you contact Redding? They should still have .280AI dies for the pre SAAMI chambering. They list them as .280 Rem Improved 40 degree. These are the dies I use for my pre-SAAMI .280AI. Mur

Sorry guys I have to disagree. I'll take my model 7 .284 s/s with a short barrel as my bush gun any day. The moose can't tell the speed difference when a 145gn Grand Slam hits them.

Talked to Redding and Cooper.

The old Redding "280 Rem Imp 40" and the new "280 Ackley Improved" die have the same part number for now.

I found dies with the old label on the box but the FL die was labelled "280 Ackley Improved".

Redding now makes a custom no.1 shellholder that is 0.014" different than the standard shell holder. That can be used with the SAAMI spec die for the pre SAAMI chamber if you can't find the old die.

If a person wants the old FL "280 Rem Imp 40" spec die from Redding they are now a custom order die. More expensive.

Anyways, I would have bought cheaper brass if I knew I would be fireforming Nosler brass too.

I use the Nosler 280AI brass in my Cooper, and I see absolutely no difference in accuracy or velocity between new brass, and previously fired brass.

I use older Nosler .280AI brass in my rifle as well.I bought 3 or 4 boxes when Nosler first came out with it.It shoots great in my pre SAAMI chamber,my dies are for resizing only. Mur

I am a 284 fan. Have 5. However, if I was buying a Cooper (I only have 1 so far), I would take the COOL 280 AI and get close to 7mm Rem Mag performance with a way more fun and unique way. As a 270 Win fan (8), i have never strayed into 280 country because Jack O'Connor would rise from the dead to battle Jim Carmichael (the first writer to drive a stake in 280 territory). But the 280 AI takes that into new territory. Might buy one myself.

As an aside, my Cooper Phoenix in 6.5-284 is the second most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I guess I have the Cooper ego problem now?

IMHO, if buying a NULA or Corlanes ultralight short action, the 284 is the way. If taking a long action, not even 3 seconds that it would be a 280 AI. Before we anyone jumps in and says a LA 284 allows longer seating, etc., that is why it is great short action round up to 150 grs.

One of my hunting pals has a Jackson Hunter in 280AI from Clay that I saw for the first time this November........need....want....gotta have.....

I haven't had the time to sight mine in yet :(

The Jackson hunter is a great rifle I love the two that I have. (just wish I could get a better trigger)

Geez!!! Quoted twice in one post! And no savage/dodge fans (equally low level of quality) jumping in. Better tell supercub I have graduated :)

My Phoenix trigger came at 2.5 lbs upon request and works well.

PS the guy with the Jackson Hunter knows Clay too :)

These are my 2010 and 2011 whitetail bucks that I harvest with my Cooper Model 52 Classic chambered for the 280 AI. The rifle shoots 1/2 and better and loves 60 grains of IMR4831 behind a 140 grain Nosler Accubond. So far we are batting 1000 on one shot kills. I love my Cooper, but Sako is just as good.
