Been eyeballing some of the coopers Clay has on his website. I'm a 6.5 fan and was wondering if anyone had experince with both or either the cooper classic or the 6.5-284.

I have the Model 52 Classic chambered in the 6.5x284 that I oredered form Clay last year. I don't know of any specific thing that you would like to know, however there is very little or nothing negative about the firearm. Being that it's a Cooper and chambered with this inherently accurate cartridge the accuracy is superb. Last September or October was the only chance I had for load development and all groups were sub 1/2" moa ....................... the best three shot group .236".

The 6.5 is the gun on the top.

Thanks for the pictures. Is that the normal magazine with it protruding like that or an extended version? How many does a normal one hold? How much room is there in the magazine? Max coal? Can you get to the lands with 140s? Amax or berger. Thanks

Good observation on the magazine! Yep, that's the normal magazine for the 6.5. I suspect the reason for the small extention is that the 284 case is robust and extra room was need to fit three............hence, maybe the creation of the short fat hunting cartridge without anyone knowing. When I received the gun from Clay there was a magazine in the gun and another spare one in the box. I don't know if this is a regular thing with this cartridge.......forgot to ask Clay about it. Your going to love this next info. The COL that I use is exactly 3.000" where my jump is .015 off the lands with a 1/4" of spare room in the magazine. The bullet that I used were Nosler Custom Competition 140 gr. and Lapua Scenar 139 gr.
I developed some loads from my favorate reloading manuals, Nosler and Sierra, however; the best loads came from a Jason Baney write-up on the 6mm BR. web-site. The best powders are H-4350, H-4831 and VV-165. Now I have to go back to the range to retry these powders and narrow down which powder to use for accuracy and hunting. This cartridge is "the" up and coming long range shooter in the 600 and 1000 yard competitions.........super accurate!!! Ask away if you have anymore questions.

But there not as heavy,as the 12 pound sako M995, I carried up syncline mountain last fall and shot a mountain goat with....never even noticed the rifle was there....light weight's over rated.

Just mind over matter. No mind, no matter...;)

That was a fairly easy hunt in the scheme of things fella, most sheep and goat hunting is days and days of more than that. You'd flip that gun quick.

Cooper w/ wood is understandable. Their Excalibur is a joke for the money.

That and I think a 6.5-284 on long action repeater is retarded. Just do a 6.5-06 and be done with it. It aint an F Class rifle.

wrong again....my cousin used the same 12 pound sako last fall and walked in 25km,shot his ram and walked out of the mountains another 25km,with a 150 pound pack....as I said, light weight guns are over rated....how on earth dad shot a 192" whitetail last fall with his 10 pound cooper classic is beyond me??? After walking all them miles with that beast of a rifle,It would be hard enough to pull the trigger, let alone raise the gun....I dont know how he did it?

Actually my first line is bang on in this case. Keep telling people how to do it; we'll just keep doing it. I am sure the deer was impressed with the rifle before it died.
Some of us have rifles that shoot like Coopers and weigh 4lbs less. I am happy to carry less and go farther.

It's WAS an up and comer, been doing it for over 10 years now. It happens that the .284 itself is now eating it's kids lunch and so are a couple others.

Question though, is the inside if the mags blocked to only 3.25" or is the 52 action used for the .284 a one off specific to size? That would be interesting......

150lb pack outta the mountains for 25km huh? That would be a good sight. Pack weight is kinda like fish stories....and since we are on the topic of fish stories how did your Poppa's WT grow since it was first shot? I recall a couple posts about that deer with a score in the 180's....great deer either way but it is startin' to feel like rubber boots are needed.

Sorry about getting the original thread off topic but "150 pound pack"?

Get real - there is not gonna be one person on this forum anywhere that would buy that bs

I would of been nice to just discuss the Cooper rifle and the 6.5x284 with the OP instead of innuendo's .........hence post #2. Lets get the whitetail out of the way. It officially scored 191 6/8 gross and netted 186 4/8 non-typical....................just another big rack to throw in the pile to collect dust. As for the 150 pound pack I guess you will have to do more research because I didn't hear the story from my nephew.

Here is the deer. Now lets try to concentrate on the Cooper 6.5x284. BTW, this deer was harvested with a Cooper/280 AI. A happy hunter from Ottawa owns the rifle now.

Sounds more like Broke Back now....

I did post a relevant question that was ignored so another redundant pick could be posted.
Moving along before this becomes another self love fest.....

After reading your first post in this thread, why would my father give u the time of day.....

It was tongue in cheek and a bigger man can dish it out and take it. Others brag and self aggrandize to puff up and feel good about mediocrity in life.
Notice how it follows.....
Have a nice day.
