I was doing some searching and didn't see a dedicated discussion so I thought I'd ask: how effective are TSX/TTSX loaded at 308 velocities? I know they're meant for higher velocities to expand fully so do they adequately expand when being punched out of a 308?

I plan to start re-loading in the new year for my gunsite scout w/ its 18.5" barrel so I will be a little lower on the velocity scale to start.

After eating deer that my friend dropped his deer with a TSX in .243 this fall without having to worry about any lead fragments, the coppers have my intrigued.

If coppers are not recommended for 308s, it's not the end of the world for me, I've read many good things about sciroccos and accubonds to know that coppers are not the be-all and end-all.

Ratfink,

So I have nothing bad to say about the Barnes ttsx. I've done multiple ladder tests with multiple powders for the 150gr ttsx. The fastest I could get the bullets traveling out of my tikka t3 308 was 2825fps average and I reached that speed with two powders, h4895 and varget. H4895 gave me the best accuracy. I also tried the 168gr ttsx as well with a much lower speed. I decided because speed is a factor to the ttsx, you need to keep it above 2000fps to have it expand fully, I went for the 150gr for my moose hunt last fall. I found that I had to stay within 400yds, which is perfect cause the furthest I shot was 350. I took this guy at about 175yds. This is now my go to round for my 308. The best thing I could recommend is just buying some and putting them to the test in your rifle. Every rifle is different!

1. I have never used a Barnes bullet "BUT" the vast majority of the reloading manuals I have give you the optimum velocity range for reliable expansion. Meaning a Barnes reloading manual may give you the answer you are looking for.

2. Google is your best friend for finding information.

3. Read the links below.

Your decision may also come down to what you intend to hunt with them. They may not expand quickly enough for deer in a .308, but on bigger game like the big moosey a few posts above, they'll certainly be fine. That being said, a lot of deer fall to Barnes bullets every year. If you're breaking bones, though, they're great.

For the record, my comments above are a bit from experience, a bit from listening to others. Put any bullet where it should go, and you'll eat well enough!

I've eaten a lot of deer, never found any lead. it goes right through them. Ive never even recovered a bullet before.

I agree. I even shot a deer at 304yds with a 7.62x39 Hornady SP and the bullet went clean through the chest and lungs and made a good kill. That was a slow-moving bullet when it hit but it sure did the job.

Thanks for the replies everyone, it certainly seems like I can't go wrong by using any of the copper lines based on your experiences.

With regards to the lead, the last deer we had was filled with lead chunks after the Hornady SST it was hit with grenaded and spread fragments everywhere. More than a few people who had burgers from that animal had to pick lead/jacket out of their meat. This article shows what I mean (for illustrative purposes only, it was the only one I could find good pictures in) http://ca.audubon.org/news/man-who-sounded-alarm-about-lead-ammunition-and-public-health

Do TTSXs expand quicker than TSXs with their ballistic tip and potentially broader/deeper cavities as shown here:
