So here's what might be a dumb question...

Anyone enlighten me on the difference between a copy and a clone. In some cases I've seen the terms used interchangeably, but I don't think that's right. I'm pretty sure when a company states that they make a copy they imply certain specific things. I've got a pretty good idea of what it means, but I'd like to hear an expert opinion.

Thanks,

DC

Not sure if there’s a set in stone definition, but IMO copy is a look alike; looks the same, but functions differently, while clone is exact ‘copy’ meaning that you can interchange parts…

It depends on the copy, and depends on the clone.

Clone's are often licenced versions of the original design made by a different manufacturer with permission of the original designer. For example, Taurus makes the PT99 which is a clone of the Beretta 92 (debatable! ). Some HK rifles are liceced and made in Turkey. I guess the significant feature here is that there is an attempt to keep the gun as close to original as possible.

Copies generally refer to a design that has literally been copied with a view to altering the design, either without permission or after the patent ht has lapsed. Norinco 'clone' just about every handgun design under the sun with various success rates. A common one is copies of the CZ-75 which has come through in designs by Tanfoglio, Spinhx, and you guessed it, Norinco. Arguably the two last designers did not really do a great job improving the CZ-75 design, although I have been very impressed with the Tanfoglio / Witness. And of course, let;s not forget the 1911...

Unfortunately, some dealers don't quite know the difference either. I have a feg "clone" of a browning hp that has barrel problems. Can't just put a browning barrel in though as I got one of the feg hp COPIES, that looks like a browning hp on the outside, but totally different locking system(parts don't interchange).

For example, Taurus makes the PT99 which is a clone of the Beretta 92 (debatable! ).
well not reallya clone; you can't even interchange the mags... plus the safety is different too, frame vs. slide mounted.

Various copies were attempted but they ended up being nothing but cyberorganic beings at best. With the introduction of clone technology, a new breed arose.

A clone is a knock off and a licenced copy is made to factory specs under a licensing agreement with the orinal maker. A FIE TZ75 is a clone of a CZ75 but an FM High Power is a licenced copy of a Browning/FN High Power. Regards, Richard :D
