...I need your help. Would it be possible, with your wonderful bullet swaging press, to take .243 bullets and swage them down to .228 ?
My .22 Savage Hi power uses this size bullet. Hornady makes these bullets, but not right now because they are swamped with orders for common sizes (gee, thanks Obama, you friggin lib-tard:mad:) I remember reading an article by Dean Grennel where he had photos of bullets he had reconfigured in various ways. Let me know. Thanks!

Generally speaking, you swage up, and draw down.

It, sadly, won't work. You would need several sizers to reduce the bullet to that size and likely it would be seriously deformed when you were done.

Malice is correct, you bump the bullet up to diameter. Having said that, you MIGHT be able to draw down a .243" bullet to .228" in several steps with Lee sizing dies................if they come in the required steps.
Good luck!
Mike

Time to start casting your own with gas checks. Bit more trouble but similar velocities can be achieved with harder medium, good lube and a gas check. You will only run out of bullets, when you decide it's more trouble than it's worth.

FWIW, there is a "stickied" thread on the Swedish Civilian Arms Forum entitled "Handloading for the 9.3.57" which includes some info on swaging down .375 bullets to .366. One of the main contributors was "Daryl S", who I think has been an occas. contributor to CGN as well.

However, this is only for a reduction of .0009", considerably less than .243 to .228, which would require a greater number of steps and may result in too much deformation.

OK, so can you bump .223 up .005 to .228 ? BTW, I stand corrected, bump/swage up, draw down, got it (as long as my CRAFT Syndrome doesn't start acting up again)! For the unitiated CRAFT is an acronym for Can't Remember A F**king Thing ;-)

I am set up to cast bullets, but I don't yet own the appropriate mould and size die, which are also hard to find. One fellow CGNer has offered to sell me cast bullets in this size and I have taken him up on it, but I am still interested in jacketed bullets if I can get them.

Assuming that you had a .228 swage die, then yes, it is possible to do that (although IIRC .004-.005" is a bit larger than one normally bumps jacketed bullets up). How good a bullet you would end up with, I don't know.

You may have a hard time finding someone on CGN with that particular die, though, and would realistically have to buy one. Add to that, while it's possible to get the dies for a standard Lee or RCBS press, Ideally you would want a heavier duty swaging press. Someone on CGN may have one of those.

I had previously looked into making my own bullets and actually made a couple dies for doing it but I very quickly realized it's prohibitively expensive and time consuming. :/
