Corn cob stuck in .223 cases?

Hi Dave? It's Peter Geer...Kent gave me your handle here. I need some help with the gunnutz site-I'm new to it. Kent said you d'man with this site, so if you have time, maybe you can answer some questions for me? Could you email me at kpgeer@sympatico.ca, since it's easier through regular email.

thanks,

Peter

Crap I just tumbled my first .223 and the cases are full of media! I am hoping that it will tumble out, I clean brass by the tub fills and will not be happy about picking each round out! WTF! 350/1000 factory, is it worth reloading?

What I do for every case after tumbling is to grab a handful out of the media, with the tumbler still running & have them all in my fist with the necks pointing into the media & then touch one (any one, it doesn't matter, as the vibration will transfer to each case in your fist) to the threaded rod in the centre. It only takes about 3-5 seconds & all of the media comes pouring out. The worst offenders are bottle-neck cases, but especially the .223 size cases, but I imagine the .17's or .20's would be a real bugger as well.

Used a drill bit @ approx .200

Chomped up the cob and it fell out easily.

Took a while for 60 cases, but they're done now. PITA.

Anyone have a source for crushed walnut? Tried petcity, petsmart and princess auto and no dice...

go to the local pet store and get lizzard litter , fine if they have it , problem solved stuff is alot smaller then corncob media and flows through flash holes and does a better job

I asked about media here a couple of months ago. Princess Auto was suggested. Got a big bag (45 pounds, or more) at a modest cost. It is crushed walnut and very fine. best stuff I have ever used. Does not pack in cases and does not stick in flash holes.

The fastest way I've found to empty small bore bottleneck cases is to do this, one at a time, per case - invert the case, hanging it by two fingers on the case rim, then push the fat part of the case against the inner lip of a vibrating tumbler --> all of the stuck media more or less "pours" out with the assistance of the vibration. Kind of slow, but it works and involves the least invasive method to the case's integrity and surface finish.

Works for me.

Also, I went to Tisol pet supply and bought a 35L bag of Anderson's Bed-o'Cobs 1/8" corn cob media for about $25 or so. It is intended as animal cage bedding for use in labs, so it is nice and clean. Cheap too!

I turn the tumbler on with the lid off and place the case neck down on the edge of the tubler. The vibrations make it come out like water. As for the flash hole I use my air compressor with a rubber blower attchment on the end. Stick it in the case neck and whamo. Out it comes.
