Correct me if Im wrong

I have a 460 SW Mag on order, I will be reloading for this and Im interested in knowing if I can use 1 set of dies for all 3 calibers. The 460 Mag, 454 Casull & 45 Colt.


Can i say it will be just like the 38/357 dies? Or do i have to purchase separate sets of dies?

For sure you will need different dies for the 45 colt and 460 as the 460 is so much longer then the 45 colt. I am not sure about the 454. I read something once about the 454, I think it was that it is just slightly different dia. so it is a pain to reload for when you are used to the other two.

I shoot 45 colt in my gun but if I want the 454 loads I just load the 460 case down to get it.

Casull bullets are the exact same as those used for 460 or 45 colt.

The only concern with using the 460 dies is can you adjust the belling and bullet seating dies enough to work with 454/45 brass. Sorry, but I do not know the answer.

But since you will need the 460 dies anyway, I would buy them first and try it on some colt brass. If it won't adjust enough, then you can buy the other set.

I went back to my loading manuals and now I remember what I read. They say the neck is thicker on the 454 brass and so you have to size your bullets to 451 dia so they will fit in the chambers. I do not know if they mean in all guns or just the guns that are spec. to the 454 chambered guns.

Also with my RCBS dies you can not bell the case mouth or crimp 45 colt brass when you are using 460 dies. You can resize but that is all. I imagine you could use 45 colt dies for 460 brass but I have never tried it as I have both sets.
