Corrosive vs non corrosive 7.62x39

When shooting corrosive i do a full teardown and cleaning of all parts but stop short of disassembling the bolt. I only disassemble the bolt once a year to clean and oil it before storing for the winter.

I want to get some non-corrosive so I can take the SKS out shooting while camping / hunting and won't have to fret about going through my full regular cleaning routine for corrosive.

Corrosive

I clean within 12 hours with hot water and oil. If out in the bush for days, I'll just clean like I would with any non corrosive shooting rifle and detail strip once I get home and clean properly.

Never had problems this way

For sure - just that when I am in the bush, I am not looking to use up fuel heating water unless it is for dinner.....Conservation time. Just my approach.

Corrosives only a real problem if you leave it without cleaning for more than a week. When we go innawoods, we use corrosive all the time, and do a proper clean once once we are outtawoods. Never had any issues.

So long as it's cleaned properly in a reasonable amount of time, corrosive is just as good as non.

For the price difference of a case of non corrosive vs corrosive, you could just throw the SKS in the garbage and buy a new one every time you bought a crate.

Or, some hot water down the bore and a decent cleaning within a reasonable amount of time. Never had an issue.

Anyone know a place that sells bulk non corrosive ?
And if you are shooting corrosive does everyone strip their guns right down after each shooting outing?
Is it worse than black powder?

I tried some non-corrosive in the beginning but since the corrosive is so much cheaper that's what i use. I strip it down after each outing and spray it liberally with G96, let sit for 5 minutes and then wipe it up.

Been shooting for 2 years this way with no issues and not a spec of rust. I've never used the water trick for cleaning!

shoot twice and clean , some ppl worry to shoot corrosive in their 200$ sks when i shoot corrosive in my 3k xcr-l and i just clean it after every time

Balistol mixed with water to clean it out in the bush if you're using corrosive ammo. Since I did the magazine and rail conversion on my SKS, its become a little bit of a choir to take it apart. Its not bad its better than a Ruger MK III pistol but its still a pain in compared to original. So I've been cutting into my 1000rd stock pile of China Sports 7.62x39 until I can get the hang of this tear down procedure and think about how I'm going to handle this when using corrosive since I have a 5000rd stock pile of corrosive.

Corrosive all the way. I only shoot that stuff although my sks has some rust here and there but that is ok. It is worn out but it continues to go bang.

The answer to the question corrosive or non corrosive depends on how disposable you view your sks.

Cheap communist commodity - shoot corrosive
above average shooter or possessing sentimental or historic value - shoot non corrosive

Personally, I do the hot water bit that has been mentioned in above posts. I have found that if I can't get to cleaning the rifle that way right away after using corrosive, I use the soft brush I received with my CZ, spray WD40 on the bristles and push it down the bore a few times. The WD40 seems to temporarily stop the rusting until I can get to cleaning properly.

I have left the cleaning for over a month after the WD40, with no problems. (a month, I know, my bad :( )

The SKS is a dirty Russian trollop that likes it ROUGH. She loves the feel of that dirty steel jacket corrosive ammo slamming bolt deep in her chamber leaving that filth all the way through her bore. When your finished slapping her about, hose her down, slather her in oil and chain her in the corner of your basement till you're ready to take her out and slap her jiggly butt around the next time. ;)
