cosmoline diy?

Wheel bearing grease boys! Works great, relatively cheap when bought by the tub and sticks like crazy. Been using that stuff for years and use it on anything from guns to too wires keeps the moisture out but... its is kind of a bear to get off. Varisol, kerosene stuff like that will get it off.

Liquid Alox is used to tumble lube cast bullets, but it was originally developed as a metal preservative. You can get it as Dralox from Dragon Bullet Lube for a lower unit cost than from Lee:

Fluid Film is another good product that provides good rust protection, but any excess can be easily removed by wiping with a rag.

Failing that, Brownells Rust Veto was designed as a Cosmoline substitute if you really want the Cosmoline experience.

I would think this to soak into the stock and turn it to mush over time. I would not recommend a petroleum grease for the long term storage of anything wooden. Just my opinion.

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that cosmoline was made from lanolin, which is the oil from sheep wool.
If you don't believe me, bugger off and I'll have another drink then.

That is what I have been using for long term storage, Amsoil #2 Syn Grease. Also use it for greasing up the Norc .45 after a cleaning

"...how to make cosmoline..." Its just thick petroleum jelly. No wax though. Any grease will do the same thing.
"...not call cosmelene..." Neither is anything else. snicker.

Yeah.. I'd think a petroleum based grease would really F up the wood myself. But what do I know!
If I was going to store my firearms long - term I think I would Vacuum pack the metal parts in a bag with some motor oil. Without Oxygen, no matter what, you can't rust. It would be a real challenge to draw down enough vacuum though.

Grease isn't the greatest.. bearing grease at least tends to absorb moisture.
