Well I've done alot of reading about removal of this stuff. This will be my first time doing it. I am planning on using the hot water and soap method. Is this this best method in your opinions? Can this method damage anything? How far do I strip this rifle? The rifle for the curious is a Yugo M48 BO.

Depending on how big the gobs are, I found Simple Green and a toothbrush works pretty well. You also won't get a headache from the fumes like you will with varsol. There are tons of ideas on this, including home-made garbage can ovens to melt the cosmoline out :)

The best method is versol/mineral spirits using a parts washer. I can degrease a very dirty gun in 5 minutes with mine. I hate the water based options, but they are safer and no fumes.

Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted on my results. I will try the hot water and soap method and let you know how it went. I'll be starting the job in the next ten minutes.
