Would like to get my son moving up from his 22 Winchester Cooey would like to get a cost-effective 223 rifle wonder what people would recommend it’s just gonna be for bench shooting any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cost effective for a rifle I would say savage 10 or 11. Not the axis though.

All my savages shot awesome, ugly but shot great. You can find used ones even in store for $700.

The Ruger American Ranch Gen 1 or 2 is probably your best bet. They shoot cheap 55gr ammo very well too! Which is a bonus. The gen 1 I've seen going for $7-800. Gen 2 will cost a bit more if you can find one.

a standard Tikka t3x lite will clover leaf rounds with half decent ammo. I have a Stainless Tikka t3x 223 and my brother has the Varmint 223. Mine will shoot just as good but my barrel will heat up after 4 rounds where as he can put 10 through his.

Buy any youth rifle chambered in 223 if he is just moving up to that. Longer length of pull rifles will be a bit tough to get behind.

Plenty of ones out there that are good. My vote would probably go for the Howa mini action youth, it is a heck of a good rifle, at a good price. And when you grows up you can throw it in a cheap chassis, and he can still keep using it. Also not mentioned yet, the micro Midas xbolt rifles are probably one the nicest shorter length of pull rifles I have shot.

Define "cost effective" for your needs. The days of cheap used guns are mostly gone and some of those would not produce good results at the bench.

I like my Savage 11 223 topped with an old Bushnell 3000 4-12. Works fine on the bench and would be fine for varmint.

Look for used deals.

Bergara Stoke 223 and they're mag fed. Short length of pull and can add spacers as needed. Good trigger, smooth action, and a Remington 700 foot print for up grades. The 16" barrel makes it a handy rifle in the woods.

No regrets with mine.

Nice rifle ..... What was the bill for that, scope included?
Not sure about that scope, but FOC is currently selling the Stoke for $1250.0 before tax and shipping.

The Roc, Does the Stoke come with the stock spacers? Looks like a pretty handy rig and a good choice for shorter shooters or people still growing!

Don’t hamstring yourself right out of the gate.

Ruger American, Tikka T3, any 1:8 twist offering that will allow you to shoot the sleeker options.
