Cost effective AR 15 (Mostly for the sake of grandfathering)

Whats a decent AR for a guy that is mostly concerned about missing the boat on grand-fathering if things come to that? It doesnt have to be the best, but definitely shouldnt be the worst. Im not interested in lowers, just best bang for the buck complete rifles. The S&W gets mentioned a fair bit; I cant stand the trigger but suppose that can be changed. A fee bucks more for something that doesnt need thst work would be great.

I guess the next question is the availability of smoking deals. ;)

Smith and Wesson or Norinco; both good rifles are about the best price you will find. Various dealers have stripped lowers for $100.00.

A used example of any of the lower cost ARs would meet the criteria mentioned by the OP - S&W, Norinco, NEA.
And if there is no grandfathering, but compensation without compensation occurs, financial loss is minimized.

Got a S&W M&P 15 for $659 and a Ruger AR 556 for $699, one for each of my sons, specifically for grandfathering should it come to that. They both work great and turns out they're pretty fun to play with. Got some handguns specifically to pass along too.

Who's got the ruger for 699? I wouldn't mind picking one of those up myself

All the lower end ARs are basically the same. You mentioned you didn’t like the S&W trigger. Unfortunately it’s the same for any AR. Even stock Daniel Defense, Colt and Stag triggers are Mil-spec and gritty.

The S&W is a proven gun. Change the trigger if you don’t like it. The ALG ACT trigger from Arms East is a good compromise for a clean but not super light pull. For about $100, it’s an excellent trigger without breaking the bank.

If you're trigger sensitive then you're going to have to spend more.
Best option would be to buy a S&W or Ruger for under $800 and buy an ALG ACT trigger for it for just over $100.
Otherwise, the best factory trigger I've played with was in a Stag.
Keep in mind, a milspec trigger will wear in and they usually become nice and smooth by around 1000 rounds. Still heavy but they do smooth out and are quite consistent at least. Unless you're building a target rifle or are planning to compete you really don't need to replace it. You get used to it and carry on.

No grandfathering, it's just a trick to calm us so we don't fight c71 as hard as we should. I predict they'll stop issuing ATT's a year or two after everything goes through.

I have just the AR for you. It's a Windham Weaponry. Better than a S&W in the trigger, barrel, hand guard, muzzle brake department. But less than the S&W in the doll hair department.

Just get a Colt Le 6920 and grandfather something that is the real deal. TDP not some meaningless Mil-Spec line that is used to confuse the masses. Better yet get a Colt Canada Rifle.

The Colt Canada or Colt USA Triggers get better with usage and that gun will last. Don’t follow the usual by lowest end route, these guns may look the same but they are not. Colt LE6920 are middle of the road and gold standard. Either that or go Colt Canada. S&W are hobby guns really. Good gun but I wouldn’t bother in todays market.

Maybe I can rephrase the question. Lets say I want something in the 1000ish range; what are some suggestions? That should skip the cheapest of the cheap. Changing triggers is no big deal, that's the sort of thing I'm resigned to so won't count that cost.

I can get a lower from my kid for nothing, but would rather have a complete gun.

Get the lower from your kid for near nothing, put in the trigger of your choosing, and buy an assemble upper.

TNA (true north arms) has some on sale right now.

Me? At this point I'd go used. Will pay more for the name 'Colt' (stay clear of that expanse thing!), but that's what I'd be looking for if I just wanted one. Second to that would be an Armalite. Sure there are better deals and better rifles out there, but I think at this stage, I'd stay with one of these manufacturers. Big question to the O.P. is what options would you like? That's probably more of the question, as most are at least mil spec.
