I know I should really just contact a smith for a quote but at this point I am just in the pondering stages.

What is the approximate cost to have a rifle put together in the following situation.

I have a weatherby MkV to act as a donor action. I would keep the current trigger and bottom metal but would want a new heavy precision barrel and stock. I know that McMillan stocks are great but are there any less expensive alternatives.

Would the cost total be

$500 to $1000
$1000 to $1500

?

with 3300 post I would have expected a MUCH BETTER worded question

pic a couple of stocks and then we can chime in, what is the weatherby thread pitch

Well let me try again.

Don!t know the thread on the Weatherby.
Let's say a McMillan stock
Work needed would be:
1) Spin old barrel off
2) put on new barrel Like a Shilen or similar. (With chamber and machining required)
3) trigger work to improve the current trigger
4) Install,bed new stock.
I know true in up the action on a weatherby is a bit of a challenge so I don,t know if that would be part of the equation.

As for all my posts this area is relatively new to me. My main interests have involved factory rifles and black powder guns. Sorry if I sounded vague but I am just looking for a new interest and I am in the learning process.

Match barrels run from $450 to 550 depending on manf and specs.

Install can run from $250 to 350 plus reamer if going with something your smith doesn't have.

Bedding is $150 to 300 depending on what the new stock needs and what you want.

Stock - $600 to 1500 depending on what you from from the McMillan catalog. Other stocks might be $200????

Exterior finish... nothing to a whole lot of $$$.

Best thing you can do is contact a smith with a list of goals and objectives. There is a huge range of pricing if willing to look at various options.

Or if you want something very specific, no problem. Most can make it happen and the cost is the cost.

much better thanks, now what caliber would you be thinking of,

reason is I am not sure the weatherby is the best kind of an action to start wtih as a donor,

and the distance you would be shooting at and which kind of sport, off bench, off a bipod or whathave you

mystic answered a lot of your questions, but just trying to help narrow it down,

if you can I would buy a stiller and build from there economical but practical

or buy a action from mystic, a pierce

As per round I was thinking 7 rm. or 300 wm as I already have a pile of reloading components and dies so that would be a cost saver. The rifle will a bit all purpose but won't be a carry rifle for hunting. As for distance everyone wants a thousand yards but for me 5-600 would suit me fine. ( we are building out at the farm and the distance from the deck to the back of the property is about 700 yards. ). If the weatherby action will work it would be great but if not I'm not married to th idea.
