Hi guys, relatively new to the forum. I was wondering if yall knew roughly the cost of taking a used gun bought online to be inspected by a gunsmith. I haven’t done this before since I usually buy new, but I want to make sure that the used rifles/shotguns I’m eyeing up are in good order without breaking the bank. Any other recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It may be as little as no charge (an example would be a 22 single shot rifle in pristine condition) ... to possibly $100. (an example would be a Browning Auto Five that needs a complete stripping and cleaning).

It’s cheap in your neighborhoods ! Nobody does anything for free around here.
The OP have to consider the 3 days inspection policies and shipping cost to return a gun. He is better to buy local than online.
There is no gunsmith in my area that will toss up his actual client work to do a quick inspection on a used gun…it take month to get any work done..

Thanks for the reply guys, I’ll be picking up the guns in person and will have a chance to inspect them myself. Still I have been told that I should take them to a gunsmith to have them inspected professionally. Sounds like that might be a serious hassle. Do you think it’s even necessary to take it to a gunsmith if they look ok?

it depends

What kind of gun is it?

95% of the time id just say strip and clean it when you get home. (youtube is your friend)
if there is anything that looks damaged go see a smith
if nothing looks damaged go to the range! (always wear eye protection)

I’m picking up an antonio zoli 12ga apache. Looks good in the pics and the owner says they’ve used it without issue. I feel like it’ll be fine but yeah just wanted to explore all my options. I will be picking up an old mosin m91/30 that looks to be in good shape too but I won’t be able to look beforehand. I think I’ll just do the strip and clean like you mentioned and see where that takes me. Thanks!

Take at look at picture below - happens from time to time with elderly milsurp stuff - was discovered after cleaning off preservative grease - and had been in my possession at least 6 months - was the particularly marked barrel that I was after - the receiver was basically a "bonus", but seller had intended to have used it - so we do not know if the crack occurred when barrel was installed, or simply over the years of sitting there. This receiver would have been made during WWI and the barrel made during WWII - most of us would consider either to be "old". I do not know when that barrel was screwed into that receiver. That barrel has since been screwed into another receiver - so far no issues or drama has been discovered with it.
