Cost of powder for reloading .308win

Everybody loves Varget:rolleyes: Except me.

Alliant Reloder 15 rocks. And I will try Reloder 17 when I can get my hands on some.

I'm another member of the "What's all the hoopla about varget?" club!:)

I've tried it in several calibers with different loads and have always been able to do better with other powders. Perhaps our guns just don't like varget.

Or maybe we tried more than a couple of powders.......;)

There is no such thing as a super powder or a super cartridge-in spite of all the marketing hype by the gun and powder companies over the yrs.Sure Varget is good in both the .223 and .308 and I've worked up some good loads with it.But I got along very nicely with propellants like IMR 3031,4895,4064,W748,H335,H4895 and BLC2 yrs before Varget or Benchmark or whatever appeared on the scene, and I still have pet loads for each caliber using these "yesterday" powders. Two of my very best powders are Olin X2924 in the .223 and Olin WC755 in the .308.Both of these are commercial ball powders which I bought in bulk before supplies dried up 11-12 yrs ago. It's like fellows convincing themselves that elk will only fall over if shot by the latest magnum offering.I remember when the 7mm STW was the absolute be all/end all.A couple of my deer hunting buddies had them and were loading the 140gr Nosler BT over 75-80gr of powder to get a MV of 3400 FPS. I was shooting a 7x57 Mauser with the same bullet using 48-50gr powder @ 2800FPS and my deer were falling over just as quickly-and with a lot less wasted meat.
