Hi

The bluing it's self should not be to expensive. It might run you $50. The prep work to make it come out right is generally a "per hour charge" sort of thing. They only know what it's cost once they are done. You *do not* want to rush the prep. A good guess is that prep will get you up over $200 for the whole job.

CAUTION - SxS guns cannot be blued with hot salts, it destroys the solder holding the ribs to the barrels. Slow rust blueing is required. This takes time and will cost more than $50. If anyone wants to hot dip your SxS barrels, run away! Contact David Henry in Bentley, Ab. for current quotes.

I was told it would be $200-$300 to reblue a lever action rifle I have. Doesn't sound like hot blueing is an option from what I read abouve though.

rust blue

I charge 200.00 min. to hand polish and rust blue a set of side by side barrels .
Final pricing will depend on inspection ,with turn around time 2 months.

Hi

I have tried a number of "home remedy" bluing products. Some do indeed work better than others. Some are easier to use than others.

I have yet to see one that is both as durable and as good looking as a proper blue job. I also know that my skills at polishing are not up to a "pro" level.

A lot depends on what you are trying to do and how valuable the weapon is.

Hi Bob, and welcome to the board. :D

I think with SXS shotguns, the bluing will probably be quite expensive. They cannot be hot-blued as a normal gun might be, because the caustic salts eat the solder that bonds the barrels together.

You are certainly right about the preparation, especially since these barrels are damaged. I am guessing that a proper job will be easily $300, perhaps considerably more if the scratches are really deep. You cannot just buff the scratches away, they must be draw-filed and then buffed. Otherwise the repair will be painfully obvious, especially after the gun is blued.
