The title pretty much sums this one up, how much does it cost of turning a Grizzly bear into a nice big rug? - assume I have the bear :)

Anyone care to explain why so much? Is it the cost of the products involved? or just the fact that the profession has a supply and demand issue?

Surely there are tanners in NL. Try calling the local taxidermists, they might know of a tannery, or even do it themselves.

Just had one done but in full mount it ran me 3500 gino but it was worth it 8" 2 inch bear when I get pics I will post thanx s

Well, it might cost your a** if you don't ask him nicely if you can borrow his fur coat. Grizz's tend to get real nasty if you try and skin them without asking first! ;)

:D :D :D

Also, one might end up loosing one's own fur (hair) in the process......example (pics) in Photo Gallery - Polar Bear Attack.....

If you want a flat "rug" with no platsic head, etc. tanning is the way to go.

I did my black bear at a tannery and it cost me $200 out the door vs $120 per foot the taxidermist wanted to charge. (for the same work btw).

I figure a nice 8 foot grizz flat rug would cost you no more than $350 out the door at the place I get it done.

Cheers.

The question is how much do you respect this animal. A skilled taxidermist will protect the hide, its thin spots, claws, paws, the head and the colour. It shouldn't lose hair or come out looking like a goat. I'm on the side of paying a knowledgible shop to do the job.

On the pessimistic side, a big bear is huge in most houses. Consider a strong canvas backing on the hide with grommets or eyes to hang Griz' on a wall, or over a saddle-like horizontal rack you can stand behind a couch.

PM sent.....

And Olek.....who did yours?

BC leather and fur (i think that's what it's called)

It is on Commercial Street (not commercial drive) in Vancouver.

He does a TON of stuff for all local taxidermists, first time I saw a polar bear rug, he also had countless grizz and even a giraffe, lol.

I'll double check the name and post it here. :)

Ooops, my bad about the adress i guess it's off of commercial street ;)

These guys are good, my bear is a rug for about two years now and i vaccuum it and still the hair stays on in tact.

p.s. I am not knocking taxidermists but the guy who does the tanning told me that about 90% of them give him the hides to tan and then they just do the plastic head, eyes and sow that silly fabric under the hide (which makes the rug look fake imho). So i figured if I can save a thousand bucks then what the hell I'll give 'em a try ;)
