Hi all,

I'm looking for a new skeet gun, and have the option of getting a decent O/U that would fit the bill... but the only problem is that it has fixed full chokes. Can anyone give me a ballpark cost as an indication of how much it might cost to have these bored out by a gunsmith to skeet chokes, or even better modified to take screw in chokes?

I'm wondering because this would factor into the true total cost of the gun, any help would be much appreciated!

thanks,
Red

Honing out a pair of OU chokes from full to whatever is alot, a whole lot less money than having screw in chokes installed.

To get exact pricing you would have to contact a good smith in your area that does this type of work. Screw in chokes can not be installed on all shotguns due to the fact some barrel's are to thin, and or the barrel walls are not concentric with the bore.

The last time I had screw in chokes installed was a good 15 yrs ago. Steve Milton at Precision Arms out of King City did the work and the cost then if memory serves was around $250. and that was for a single barrel and 3 choke tubes.

I do not know where your located but enquire in your area who is good at this type of work. Most likely the gunsmith will want to see the gun and do a few measurements on the barrel's before he can give you a definite answer and cost. There is a thread here on CGN recomending gunsmiths and what work they do.

If you just want the chokes honed out to skeet that is alot less work and money and can be done on most shotguns with out issue. I had Steve hone choke tube out for me once and the cost was about 25 bucks.

Best be doing your home work on this one befroe buying anything.

epps does it 100 bucks a barrel last I checked, and you can sometimes use Briley thin wall chokes for thin walled barrels. If you now have a full choke there should be lots of metal to thread...

good luck

No argument there! :)

Thanks for the information. Having the work in the $200-$300 range would probably make it cost prohibitive, but in the $25-$100 range it'd be worthwhile. I didn't realize that it would make such a difference having them honed out compared to the screw in choke route. I will call my gunsmith, but I just wanted a general idea of if it is practical or not first.

Thanks!

I had a local gunsmith cut off a damaged 28" modified choke barrel for a 1200 Winchester (it was "bulged" near the muzzle), shorten it to ~24", reem it, thread it and now it sports an Xtra full turkey choke.... and it was $75 for the whole deal (choke included)...
