Cost to ream rem 700 in 243 cal to 7mm08 vs re barrel?

Ya its 2 feet. Never had a rifle shoot Like this. Going to redo rings bases again with 3rd scope. And shoot in tomorrow or next day. The thing with it being out so much is the only thing I can see being problem is the barrel or scope I've tried a 2nd scope and same but there is nothing obvious in the barrel either. (That I can see )
Thanks for all the input Brad

Give the bore a good cleaning too...could have severe fouling, rust, etc. If you have wipeout foaming bore cleaner, that stuff does wonders. If not, and just the amonia types, pay attention to how the brush "feels" when you are pulling/pushing it through the bore, you can usually tell if it's smooth or rough just like that. Also check the muzzle fit for a .243 cal bullet, make sure it still is a .243...only other reason I can think for that poor groups lol.
I've shot real sewer pipes, bores looked about as smooth as an asphalt road, and they still shot reasonably well.
Double check the bases are correct for the rifle, and that the action screws are snug.
2 feet something is wrong with the gun.

2 feet something is wrong with the gun.

Something is very VERY wrong with any rifle thats shooting 2-foot groups @100. Bad accuracy is measured in inches, not feet. Hell, my SKS can do better than 2 feet at 200 yards with iron sights!

I am assuming the rifle doesn't have iron sights, to eliminate the scope as being the source of error?

Have you asked your father in law about it? As Hitzy hinted to, maybe its not a 243 anymore. That is honestly the only way I can think that would make it shoot two-foot groups. Seriously, Smooth-bore muzzle loaders are getting better than 6" groups at 50 yards, so even if the barrel was garbage it shouldn't be THIS bad.

Father in law said it used to shoot OK. No iron sights on it, but I will shoot it again Monday with re installed rings bases and different scope. I'm going to take it to a smith next Friday to look at the barrel if I can't figure anything out by then.

Are the bullets keyholing? I shot a borrowed rifle once that had been a truck gun that was shooting terrible. Wasps had built a nest in the end of the barrel and the rifling in the last few inches was destroyed.

Finally had some time to work on the 243. Spent the evening last night getting the copper out of it. Took a while. Shot it this morning. The first group was about 12" then tightened up. The grouping is now holding 6-8". Still not good. But I might have something to work with now. Hope to get the barrel looked at tomorrow. At least now I have a poi reference piont. With 2 feet, I had no reference. There is still a few issues to figure out. I have my work cut out for me.

That's good news, I'd look into getting an inch or two chopped off the barrel and re-crowned, not expensive and has sorted out many poor shooting rifle stories for some reason

Well I brought it into smith in edmonton. Turns out there was a slight buldge in barrel at the muzzle. Getting it cut and crowned. Looking g
forward to getting it back and seeing how it shoots! Its no beauty and it has other problems but if I can get it to shoot under 2" I'd be happy.
Will up date after I get it back.

Update on rifle. Shot it today and am pleasantly surprised. Its shooting 1" groups!
Was 130.00 well spent to turn a heavy walking stick in to a solid shooting , good Cary around rifle barrel is now at 19". Muzzle blast is there but actually not as bad as I expected.
I'm very happy!

Where I live I dont hunt a lot of thick bush. But I sat deep in it this morning so I decided to bring the father in-laws shortened up 243. It made a nice heart lung shot from 80y on a nice young buck. Rifle was a pleasure to handle in the thick and shoots well now.
