I tried searching but my internet connection is very bad today (or something is wrong with my computer) and it is PAINFULLY slow (so much so I want to bust it). I want to get int reloading 45 acp - what would 50rd (or 100, or whatever number you have experience with to provide an estimate) cost me? I can't believe how much this stuff has gone up since I last bought it last year - another reloader is now born.:)

All depends on the bullet cast or copper jacket. It is a pig on components compared to 9mm .
If you use cast, then add each pound of powder is 7000 estimate grains. Lets use Bullseye by Alliant 4 grains per load depends where u shop lets say $33 a ilb tax in. Primers $32 a thousand ..cast lead 78 to 125 a thousand ..new brass if you can find it $250 a thousand estimate. Going high. Note if you get lets say 5 and thats low for number of reloads from your brass its only $50 a thousand.
Total $20 for powder as you will have about 3000 grains left
primers 32 brass 50 lead lests say 90 $190 a thousand. It can go higher or lower depending on material so $19 for 100. New is about $42 a 100 but you get the brass so knock it down to $32 actual a hundred. I always figure half the price.

So true really no savings but it sure is a blast making your own. Yup chew through ammo like a squirrel on a bag of peanuts. Start loading 45-70 then watch the dollars fly..

$4.50 per hundred tops. I cast my own, make my own Felix lube. Brass lasts for ever or it seems that way. Primers and 5.3 gr of 231 are all my cartridges consume in cash. Equipment has been paid for years ago so I don't figure in my capital costs to get started. Yea you shoot more... a lot more.

Take care

Bob

I enjoy reloading. I cast my own bullets using range scraps. I bought 5000 45 acp brass 2 years ago for $200. I buy primers in cases of 5000. I buy powder in 8 pound jugs. The last I calculated it was around 2.38 a box of 50.
Powder $24 for 7000 grains divided by 5.5 = 1272 rounds = $18.86 for 1000 rounds
Primers $28.80 for 1000
Brass $0
Bullets $0
18.86 + 28.80 = $47.60 per 1000
47.60 divided by 1000 = .00476 X 50 = $2.38 per 50
None of this takes into consideration the power for melting, gas for going to get it, but all the bullet molds and lead pot and reloading press can be paid for in the first few thousand rounds you reload and it’s a rewarding hobby when it all comes together and you keep them all in the black. I reloaded 7000 rounds from March 07 to April 08 and shot 2700 rounds of 45acp, in the same period. Happy reloading.

brass once fire $120/1000, reload 6 times $0.02/ load
Lead bullets approx $80/1000, $.08/load
primer $35/1000, $0.035
powder Titegroup purchase bulk from Hodgdon $20/lbs, 5 gr/load so $0.015

Total for 50 rds is approx $7.5

Have you checked out the price of new ammo lately???

45ACP is around $350 to $400 per thousand. (not including taxes)

Here are my numbers for reloading with copper plated per 1,000

$ 126 Plated Bullets - Frontier from Marstar
$ 27 Primers - Win from LeBaron
$ 13 Powder Tightgroup - Higginsons $19/lb using 4.6 gr
____
$ 166 per thousand (not including taxes)

Or $ 8.30 per 50

This price is using current, non discounted prices. I can do better on most of the components.

Great info guys, thanks. That calculator link looks like a good way to estimate the costs. Buck45 is right, no real cost savings, you just end up shooting more - and in this case more IS better. :)
Again, thank you all for the input.

You can get them from Russels or WSS if they have stock.

The "best" place is to cast your own......cheap cheap cheap......if you shoot enough to make it worth while. The really nice thing is, if you cast your own, you only need primers and powder. If you buy a few thousand primers and a couple of pounds of powder, you'll be set for a long time. The ammo store never closes :D

Here's my cost for 44 magnum

45 is even cheaper because it uses half the powder.

Just figured out the cost for another thread. Not including brass, of which I probably now have a 10 year supply.

$9.65 for 100 rounds of 44 mag as opposed to $62.00 for 100 store bought.

Primer - 3.5 cents
Powder - 3.15 cents for 8.4 grains of green dot
Bullet - 3 cents would be my guess - I cast my own

Total cost per cartridge 9.65 cents or $9.65 per 100
