So. I am getting the opportunity to hunt cats over dogs this fall. Never done it. What do I need to take with me for preserving the hide in the bush so I can freeze it and take it to taxidermist when I get back. I have a pack and all the other stuff for regular big game hunting.... usually I leave the hide and take the meat. This time it will be reversed.
I am going to carry my '57 Win 94 in .30-30 just for funzies. Never taken an animal with that rifle and the slender profile and light weight is just what I need for running through the bush after the dogs. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

get a apir of the best boots you can aford .it is hard to do anbything to a hide with out first scrapping it .the best bet is to wrap it skjin side to skin side tpo skin side do not get any blood on the hair and do not let the hair side touch the hair side when folding the hide up ..if you are going to be in the bush for a few days i guess you could us coures salt .but i would imagen you will be close to roads and not sleeping in the bush after the kill . .the most imporatn theink is to get the hide cool as fast as posable DUTCH

How long are you going to be out in the bush for. If only a day or two, there's nothing to really worry about. Otherwise salt it.

make sure you are in shape.

everyone always underestimates hoe taxing it is following dogs

Cougar meat is some of the best you can get. Don't leave it in the bush. Get the hams smoked and you'll never want to go back to pork.

If you're close to home, skin it out, fold it properly and stuff in freezer.

Damn you're lucky ... I was talking with a fellow CGNer who guides hunts like this ... I'm so jealous!

p.s. definately take some of the meat home there partner ... ;) :D ... and take lots of pics if successful.

You don't want to put a big a hole in it . Try 22-250,243,6mm If you are getting it tanned. Be in shape those dogs can run for miles.

His old Turdy turdy will do just fine at close range and wont put a big hole in the hide. The ones you mention with the wrong bullet at close range will do lots of hide damage for sure.

That would go the same for the 30/30. One would think he would do the research on the bullets. Or have used the one best for his needs.
