Cougar hunting with dogs?

I respect hunting. Hunters .
Fishing. Shooting birds , rabbits , slaughtering of cows.
What ever you want to kill and eat .

But when a creature that is a "hunter"
runs in fear till cornered or exhaustion
by animals that it does not understand
then dies a throphy .

ya im the Ethical police ...
Be a man and climb into the tree and
kill it with your hands.
Then Ill buy whats left of you a beer
Till then your a :jerkit: and ya make me :puke:

I went on one cougar hunt in my life, I was along for the ride, not the shooter so wasn't even carrying the weight of a rifle.... I smoked at the time and was unable to keep up with the action... too out of breath.... it's not as easy as setting out a pack of dogs and watching sportsdesk with a cup of coffee then walking into the woods to find where the dogs and treed cat are.....lol....

Get out from behind the desk jockey board and say that to a dog mans face. I guarantee it'll only happen once.:HR:

You talk much when you know little. The ignorant is strong in this one........

Ever been on a cougar hunt? Have any clue on what is involved in training cougar dogs? Ever spent much time with hounds? Ever spent much time with someone who trains them? Ever seen what can actually happen on a cougar hunt?

Thank you for your opinion.

So...what do you do as a hobby/interest/occupation? Please let us know so that we can return the favour and pass judgement in a public forum.

I remember quite a few years back now, when CGN's hunting section of the board was packed full of members posting great hunts with pictures and stories to go along with them. Now that is a rarity because of members like patjohnw who feel they need to give their opinions and pass judgement on other hunters because they don't agree with it. We have had long time members leave because of this and some that just gave up and wont bother posting about their hunts anymore and I don't blame them one bit.

It is a damn shame that the ethics police feel the need to jump in all the time. IMO it has ruined this section of the board

Feel freel to delete ..

Trolling the hunting forum with anti hunting type posts is not allowed. Opinion is one thing, but this is a hunting dedicated forum so dont post anti hunting garbage in it.

Infraction issued.

For anybody else, if you want to post anti hunting type posts...I suggest you take it to OT and not post it in this forum.

Well Ted, tell us what you are thinking? Are you going to come south and chase a dream? I am sure you would have a hoot and meet some good folks doing it.
What rifle would you carry?
For some reason I think a 25-35 in a Model 94 carbine would be the "cat's meow". Oh......(groan)

there isn't much in life better than big game hunting with a dog, it is what both men and dogs where meant to do. not pushing paper, not building houses or mowing the lawn, or anything else.

finding a fresh cougar track is plenty hard enough, for anyone that thinks it is unsporting.

Ironically, if the anti dog hunting poster had actually gone on a hound hunt he would have know that bears/cats/pigs don't 'run until exhausted or cornered' but quickly choose to jump into a nice safe tree and torment the dogs from above (bears/cats) or find a nice safe log or bank to back up against and tear the dogs apart (pigs)..... all of which I have personally witnessed while hunting with dogs.
Of course 'quickly' for a wild animal generally takes long enough for the hunter to be worn out. :p

Why Not- will you be hiring a houndsman to do this hunt? I haven't run with hounds in a few years and I'd love to hear how the hunt goes!

I've been on one cat hunt in my life. Took 3 of my bear hounds to Idaho in 1985. Treed one mountain lion in 5 days--only track I found that the dogs could run. That country like to kill me--too steep and high.

I treed my first bear in 1963--been doing it ever since. In the circles I travel in--I came to it late in life--I was 14. 'bout everything I care to do got a dog involved.

I've had people fuss at me claiming they ain't no sport in shooting a bear outta a tree--I guess they are right--but gettin to the tree is a different matter.

On occasion people have asked me why I do it. I've pondered on that my ownself--I ain't got no answer.

How far do you think that you could follow the dogs through thigh deep snow, over dead falls on the way to the treed cat? Do you think that you could make it two miles under those conditions? How about a mile?

No matter how you choose to hunt, people that do things differently are going to choose to judge and criticize. Some won't be happy till all hunting is gone. It's a pretty sad state of affairs. I enjoy hunting with hounds and don't expect everyone to want to do it but it sure would be nice if they tried to understand and respect this great heritage but I guess that is a lot to ask of some. Carry on bashing...................For the rest of you, enjoy.....

Not a anti response but hunting cats and bear with dogs wouldn't be my idea of fun.

I have dog's, use one for bird hunting. But i wouldn't want to see the dog get killed or torn up all the time just to get a opportunity to shoot a cat or bear.

My 2 cents fwiw

Pretty rare for them to get torn up actually. It can happen but not often. Hounds are more likely to get killed by wolves than a cat or bear but even that is rare. Most hounds live a pretty long healthy life.
