Not surprised, there are cougars in Ontario. It's not really a big deal to be honest.

We've heard of cougars for a while in and around Bothwell , all unconfirmed. It boggles my mind why MNR won't be honest about this. I'm just surprised they may be this far south .

As far as MNR is concerned cougars have not been in Ontario for almost 100 years.
They were hunted and killed offway back when and obviously don't migrate from there home breeding ground at all. Every now and then someone calls in a sighting and it is dismissed, one of these days someone is going to kill a cat and will probably be charged with poaching.

Here's one.

Somewhere there has to be a geographical map of Canada, that shows the slow but steady eastward 'migration' of cougars.
I had friends of friends who ranched in Manitoba twenty years ago, that reported cougar tracks in the dirt near thier horse corral.
MNR officials tried to deny it then. I've personally hunted quieter areas of the Wood River region, South Saskatchewan, where the landowners spoke of thier co-operation with the local zoo & MNR officials in cougar release programs. Here in Northern Alberta, it`s not unknown for MNR officers to hold seminars for regional cattle ranchers, regarding this matter.

The expansion of cougar numbers, following peek deer populations, is no mystery to some.

It`s just the further eastward they move in rural Canada, the more chance of being spotted by otherwise disbelievers. (city folk)

I was talkng with someone yesterday about the cougar sighting in Dealtown and they stated it has been claimed the MNR released 3 cougars near St. Thomas a few years back but MNR has denied reports of such activity taking place. Now normally I would discount this but I was talking with a friend who at one time was into Herpatology and was part of a research study on snakes in Ontario. At the end of their study the research group found a rare snake in a Prov. Park . When reported to MNR they refused to acknowledge and publish the findings for fear it would cause a lot of foot traffic in he reported area . They refused to publish verified facts by an independent group.

Do I value MNR - Absolutely! , but do I trust the politicians in MNR 100% -- Not a chance

Can they really charge you for shooting an animal they claim doesn't exist??? lol
Oops thought it was a coyote hehe.

Phone 'em up and tell 'em you saw a Dodo bird in Southern Ontario see what they say. Phone a week later and tell 'em you saw it again and shot it. If they send someone out to investigate well I be damned and they be dumber than I thought. Sounds far fetched but I personally wouldn't put something like this past them ... They've done far worst in the past.

Saw one myself in the early 1990's on Highway 401 at Chatham. Was driving East with my high beams around 1am. . It was only about 125 yards in front of me and was walking in the grass off the south shoulder of the highway. It bounded north crossing the East bound lanes right infront of me at about 50yds and it's paws only touched concrete once before it landed way off into the center median. Saw it clear as day.
