Where I am we have seen and heard of the occational cougar sighting over the past 30 years. I remember Dad showing us one when we were kids sitting on top the gas tanks at the farm. They are few and far between. Not your regular spot to see one in the bald arsh prairies.

Now as of this year there have been multiple sightings in the parks near here and NOW quite a few close to the City. A city of over 60,000. That being said there has been a general tag issued for them. I talked to a few people around about it and low and behold someone phoned me with a so callled problem.

I now have the place, sign and hardware....but how to do it. I can shoot at extreme distances quite well and there are not trees around so dogs may just be killed. You can't hunt with hounds until December but anyways.

Hoping someone may tell me a little secret on how to find, what to look for, and where they might be seen at certian parts of the day.

Most spottings around here have been later towards evening. I've been thinking that the smaller creeks and the smrid would be good places to start looking for sign.best of luck this season.

Getting harder to find these days....

People really started to notice them in the late 60's, but they've been becoming more rare since about 2002. Here's a classic vid from their heyday...

buy one of them "Miss November" doe decoys, set it out in an open field in the bedded position with an electronic caller blaring "deer distress" and sit and wait.

I plan on using her for coyotes this winter, I can't see why it wouldn't work.

The decoy is a great idea but no electronic calls. Only the manual kind. I will give that a try though, thanks.

I know there was a guy who hunts cougars around my parent's ranch and he goes out with a few dogs and I believe he just uses the dogs to track and tree them. Not sure how successful he is every year, but he's out there doing it. I'm thinking it's a loooonnngggg hunt.

what? I thought Alberta changed their laws and electronic calls are legal now? or is that JUST for coyotes?

hand call with deer distress would work fine, I can do some pretty decent fawn distress with my rabbit call.

I think this was for the Cougar hunt only. Being that it is a tag, not a predator hunt. This seems to me to be a hunt so that the Fish and Game can have another resource to see how many there are. You have to call them if one is shot so they can get a tooth from it. It is all right with me. I have never hunted them before and to hunt them is this contry is going to be an callange.

As for the sheep part there are some across the river from this spot..
