I know, im wrong, dumb stupid and you hate it so lets not argue now. I have a no4mk1 Rof.f sporter with a dud for a barrel. I got to thinking about it and could a mosin barrel work with this. Call ot bordom and insanity but i was to build some bastard monstrosity of a rifle. Have a great night!

Speaking from a place of pure gunsmithing ignorance: I doubt they are mounted in the same way/have the same threads and it probably will end up being nearly the same price to just get a new .303 barrel put on there.

To do a barrel switch, the donor barrel shank has to be quite a bit bigger so it can be re-threaded to the new shank size. The threaded MN shank is about 1.185". The LE is about just under 1"

If you want to rechamber the MN to 303Brit, then the donor shank has to be shortened by (I guess) about 3/4" to get rid of the wider chamber.

If the MN shank is big enough to re-thread, I would leave it in 7.62x54R. Similar ammo, but a lot cheaper.

A No. 4 shank is 1" in diameter, 14 pitch. MN is a bit smaller, 16 pitch. The MN shank could not be turned and threaded to fit the LE.
The major diameter portion of a MN barrel is quite long. The existing shank could be removed, and a new shank for the LE could be machined. There would be enough "meat".
Rechambering would be necessary. Given ammunition prices, setting it up in x54R would make sense. But it might be hard to find a 'smith with the reamer.

This method could be used to build a LE in 7.62x39 also, no?...

A LE barrel can be shortened at the breech, set back and threaded for 7.62x39. I have heard that the shortened chamber will accept x39, if cut just right. I have always used a reamer to finish the x39 chamber. I suppose a MN barrel could be adapted for x39 as well.

Ah... that is easier yet.. very cool

The x39 repeating conversions from Australia use a recessed boltface and plunger ejector.
x54R would require no bolt modifications.
Anyone ever tweeked a .303 magazine to use x54R rounds?

all this or...you could just put the sporter LE to pasture (she's done her duty), and just shoot the MN as is? (hideous action and all). With the money you save on x54mm vs. .303Br you can invest in a nice hardwood billy bat to wack open the action on the Nagant saving broken boot heels or bruised hands. :)

This sort of conversion is done for the sake of doing it, not necessarily because it is practical.
One problem in doing a x54R is the reamer - that would be $150. Gauges for the rimmed cartridge can be easily made, save buying them.

Plus barrel blank in .311/.312, then have it threaded.

Somewhat off topic, but I have to ask... my Mosin cycles very smooth and easy. Is it common to have a sticky/difficult bolt on the MN?
