Just wondering here, just starting with LR shooting... Could a high quality barrel and action in 243 be competitive in a LR situation... JP.

Yes, but if you are going to add a high quality bbl and action, why would you not optimize the case, If it was me, I would go with a .243 improved

longer neck would give you more room to chase the lands, i'd personally go with a 243 over 6mm rem just because lapua brass is available

one of my favourite reads on the 243 and 243 AI.

Hell I might read it again right now. :D

Wow thank, this is super good info reading, i am all ready dreaming of my new Nemesis barrel in 243 and that 115 gr DTAC load @ 3150... JP.:)

243 is an excellent long range cartridge. With the caveats that you need a fast twist to stabilize the long VLD bullets and a heavy target profile barrel.

Using Lapua brass and molycoating for extra velocity I was able to get my 243 to stay supersonic all the way out to 2000 yards. I hit targets at 1500 yds no problem. The biggest issue was spotting the misses at long range. Those little 243 bullets don't throw up a lot of dust sometimes.

.243 A.I Rocks !!

I am contracting Sean at Northshorebarrels to build a .243 A.I. as I write this. I will report back as soon as he starts the build and do progress reports. Should be fun.

243 Win Ohhhh Yesss

It's called re-enventing the wheel. The 243 or 243Ackley is one of the best 1000mts calibers today. Barrel twist of 1 in 8 and 105VLDs and a Rem 700 action. This assembled by a GOOD gun smith and you will ready to go.

They must be shooting all these .243's that you guys are mentioning at long range back East, or in other shooting disciplines, as I have not seen a .243 or it's AI variant at any F-Class match I have attended in Canada or the US.

I have however seen many 6BR, 6 Dasher, 6x47, 260, 260AI, 6.5x47, 6.5x284, many different 7mm and 30cal chamberings as well, but never a .243.

.243 is not the most efficient case design, if you want the speed of the .243 look at the 6SLR (6 Super Long Range) or the 6x47 Lapua as these are designed for long range accuracy.

I want mine for varmint (coyote) hunting at long ranges. No BR or other matches are in my future with this caliber rifle.

105gr A-Max will sometimes work in a 10" twist, and 8 or 9" should be no problem. The 105gr VLD is another good one, but might need a slightly faster twist.
