Could a regular 243 be a LR rifle...

I don't want to argue with anyone but I'm having my 243 Win rebarreled to a 6mm x 47 Lapua after 2 years of 243 Win experimentation.
243 Win is a great hunting cartridge but if you're looking for a much better 6mm long range short action cartridge you should look up and consider:
  • 6XC Norma
  • 6mm x 47 Lapua
  • 6mm x 47 Swiss Match
  • 6mm Creedmoor
And if 6.5mm is your thing (it's not mine):
  • 6.5mm x 47 Lapua
  • 6.5mm Creedmoor

105gr A-Max will sometimes work in a 10" twist, and 8 or 9" should be no problem. The 105gr VLD is another good one, but might need a slightly faster twist.

I will be going with a 1:8 twist. We shall see what works best with it. Thats part of the fun. I really think I could do research for the next year and still not come up with the one perfect caliber to go with. I will be starting my own thread soon once my build gets started. Cheers.

I want mine for varmint (coyote) hunting at long ranges. No BR or other matches are in my future with this caliber rifle.

The 243 is awesome for long range coyotes and other varmints. The 6BR will do basically the same thing with a bit less velocity. The biggest drawback to the BR is that it doesn't feed as well from a mag.
