I'm up to my hips in debt right now, slowly coming out of it. But eventually I will be swimming.... and so I started pondering owning a 1911 in .45 acp (not sure if they come in different calibers as this is the only one I've ever seen them in). The only thing is, is that I don't know if you can buy them new and who makes/sells them now. Its going to be a long time before I buy one, but I'm just killing the curiosity right now.

Check Freedom Ventures at the top of this page, one of the sponsors. Marstar also sells norinco 1911's. Lots other places you can buy brand new 1911.

not a silly question at all, the 1911 can be in 9mm but this caliber does as well in other guns, i would stick with the 45, just a little more expensive to buy ammo or reload, but fits the 1911 like hand in glove.

lots of good choices on the ee, also check armco, top of the page, gunnar is good guy there

figure out if you intend to shoot it a lot or to compete, if so, i would budget for about $850 for new or used (in excellent shape), with some decent mags tossed in for that starting price. good luck.

armco has a nice sti spartan not too expensive and gunner does a sweet trigger job on it too.i love mine i shoot it more than my kimber custom 2 tle.

Buy a good quality one when you can afford it and will become a family heirloom.

.45 ACP The "Lords" caliber.

guns and ammo has done a number of articles on various caliber swaps( the last one i remember had 5- 22, 9mm, 38 super, 38/45 clarke, 45acp and 460 rowland) but they were using a commander frame b/c of the position of the ejector on the frame- they did mention you could a gov't frame but you have to move/modify the ejector
