I recently purchased a brand new Springfield 308 (M14) with the stainless barrel upon attempting to work the action I discovered about half way through pulling back it sticks or jams. But if you pull fast it will go all the way back but it sure isn't what I would call delicate. Is this normal until you fire some rounds through it or did I just purchase a problem. The obvious frustration is I just paid 3600.00 for this and trying to understand why the seller didn't pick up on this. Should I even attempt firing it

It gets fully stuck if you pull slowly but if you pull fast it just makes it back, if you let the receiver handle go it will slam shut like normal. With the trigger assembly removed it slides back perfectly

I believe there is enough grease I am hoping that putting a box of shells through it will fix it up, I just hope my thinking isn't flawed first time I have seen this happen. Geez my norinco m14 is smoother

Could be the locking lug sticking?

Those things werent designed to be "handled with care" :) lol

check the main battle rifle threads out. Until then, pull like a man and shoot that puppy until you can cook on it. :)

The resistance you're feeling is probably the hammer contacting the bottom of the bolt. Perfectly normal.

You are probably better served asking this in the Main Battle Rifles section of the forum, anyways…

I also believe the resistance you are feeling is the hammer, in particular I find the hammer on the M14 can be a little heavy when cocking it…

First the good news I fired 3 boxes of shells through it today and it performed flawlessly, feeling much better now. I will also try and post in the right place for future my apologies but you are all correct I just need to toughen up I guess I was being a bit to cautious when it just needed to be treated like what it was designed for. Thanks
