So think I've read just about all the threads titled "buying first handgun-need help" but I'm going to start another one. sorry.:D
I just passed my RPAL and am waiting for the paperwork to arrive but I'm trying to figure out what to buy when I get my license. It won't be for a couple months, until I get the funds saved up but I'm pretty excited about it.

Anywho, I've been looking at the Glock 17's that Epps are selling for $499.00 (Second Generation, Case, 2 Mags, Fixed night sights, etc) but I was wondering is it better to buy a new third generation for a $100 more (although it will have the regular fixed sights)??
I may possibly try getting involved in IPSC sometime in the future, seems like fun.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!:)

I would advise you to go to a gun store and fondle a bunch of different guns.

Personally, I find that Glocks are excellent shooters, but have the ergonomics of a brick. The P99 fits my hand and puts the controls where I can reach them, as does the S&W M&P. Try a Sig out for giggles 'n ####z as well. Lots of people swear by them. Maybe even a Beretta or two. Lots of options out there.

Unless you really know how to exam a barrel and all the mechanism, It is better to get a new one for a hundred dollars more. furthermore it is your first gun, get a new one.

The good advice has pretty much already been said! See if you can buddy up for a range day and try out a few as well.

FWIW, the night sights on the used ones may not be as bright as they were when new. If they're second generation Glocks then they're probably at their 'half life', maybe 6 more years of life or less.

Hi, I'd like to thank everyone for their advice, I appreciate it. I believe I have found a new glock 17 from a member of the board, he'll hold it for me until my paperwork goes through, I thought that was pretty good of him.
I did think about the S&W MP9 but I like the fact that parts/accessories are easy to come across for the glock. The Beretta's and SIG's are out of my budget for the time being.
I never even thought about the night sights fading, should have figured on that with all the archery crap I've got.
I guess if I don't like my purchase I'll just have to resell it.

If you are new to handguns, it should be a 22. Lots of cheap practice and good training. If you enjoy it and want to go farther in the hobby, you will buy lots of guns anyway so wait till you are better at it before you spend time and money on a larger cal/pistol. Once you become a "handgun enthusiast" you will want to have a rimfire handy to teach new people to enjoy the sport. So you see you really can't loose with a 22.

Just my 2 cents. BTW I have the .44's, .38/357, 9mm's etc and if I had to go down to one pistol it would be my High Standard Supermatic. I just hope I never have to make that decision.
