Couple grouse

The furthest north I've seen them is out by the golf course in Westsyde, Kamloops.
They run all through the Fraser Canyon and up the Fraser River.
Ashcroft, Spences Bridge, Lytton, Deadmans and such.

Nice birds gents

We are pretty much full swing into Ptarmigan season up here. Over the past 2 weeks they have been arriving. While not as tasty as a good ruffie in my opinion, they are still just as dim-witted. And travel in flocks at times over a dozen. Makes it nice with our 10 bird bag limit.

I"ll be heading out this weekend looking for them and taking out a new guy that moved up here to try his luck.

Thanks Looky, I didn't see any in the canyon this spring but I wasn't really in the right areas for them I guess. Grouse galore near BB. If one was inclined they might be able to pull off quite an upland hunt in the canyon with turkey, grouse and chuks provided the seasons line up.

Good eating?

Dryer n'a popkorn tewt.
My buddie showed me how to make a nice meal with them and grouse.
Kam A'Lah King.
Skint them out, debone and make mini stew owt the pieces.
Fry in skillet or a dutchie type pawt, add unyuns and slow fry with good oil.
Toss in a can oh vert giant nibblets korn, green pepper to yer flavouring and a
can oh chicken a la king and simmer up.
Should resemble what one would find in a chicken pie.
Just wonderful.

Interesting, I have never seem them outside of the Southern Okanagan. I can think of a place near ashcroft/cache creek that fits the bill ecosystem wise.

Not trying to poach your spot (no longer in that area at all) but can I have a general idea of where you have seen them in the Fraser Valley?

Does anyone have any info on when they were released originally?

Anywhere from Lillooet to the Chilcotin River confluence. Lots around Big Bar. Also away from the river around Cache Creek, Ashcroft, Walachin, Kamloops, etc.

I'll dig up some of the stocking info tomorrow. Current populations are almost certainly the result of several/many releases and subsequent range expansion. BC is the only place in Canada with established wild chukar populations, as far as I know. It's a WHOLE different world from the stocked birds most guys get to shoot! I try to squeeze a hunt in every year and have to drive a long ways to do it!

PSA: If yer deaf you may want to avoid the railroad tracks :D

Try shoving a couple fingers underneath end of the breast bone and ripping up Looky, beats the step and stamp every time imo.

BGB thanks for the info, cool that they are around that far northeast.

I hear ya Looky! Train tracks and railway bridges lack fond memories for us, too! When we lived in the big bad city we had train tracks less than 100 yards away from our house. We used to ride our ATC's along side them. We would sometimes go to the Pembina Hotel for a 24 case of beer and carry it home on the rear rack. Also did go thru the MacDonald's drive thru (just once) and ordered some fast food. We lived not too far from being out of town and we'd ride out to the La Salle River in St Norbert and on out to the Park. One time we came to the rail bridge, my young son (on his Yamaha Tri-Zinger and I and a buddy on our ATC's, it was in the winter time and lots of snow around. We looked back and saw a train's head light a come'n, but man, it was one hulofa long ways away. We figured we had plenty of time to get across that bridge and on to the next cross road with time to spare. But, no-sir-e. That sum-bit train was upon us before we made it to the cross road, we were across the bridge easy enough, but not quite to the road. It stopped and we got our ATC's off the tracks and waved for the train to go! It wouldn't moved! I bet they was on the 2 way radio calling the Railroad Police! We had no other choice other than to get back on the tracks and boogie to the cross road. We then hauled azz through some residential district and found our way out to the frozen river. Thank God!
