So this is my first crack at a precision build (Remington 700 police in .308 short action). There will be mods to come in the future but as of now it is what it is. So I finally bought a scope yesterday and needed a set of rings, is there that much of a difference when it comes to rings? I bought a set of Burris steel rings. Just wondering your opinion on them if they will hold the scope at zero? another issue is the guy working at Le Baron was a total #### and didnt help me with ring size, I am wondering if my scope is to close to my barrel? (about a millimeter gap) should I return the medium rings for large? The scope is so close to the barrel I cannot fit the lense cover on. Sorry guys for all the questions... I am more a milsurp guy trying to learn the way of the precision gurus.

If the scope isn't touching the barrel, that's fine. Many shooters like the scope as low as possible. How is the cheek weld? If the scope cap is a problem, you might be able to cut away the bottom to clear the barrel. There are also scope covers that aren't caps. I don't shoot with caps on my scope anyway.
Burris rings are fine.

I have cut the bottoms of scope caps before so it would clear the barrel and the bottom of the scope, but all the times I have done that is on rimfire rifles (vibration is less, plus they were heavy barrels as well). I was just wondering since it is a larger round will it vibrate the barrel enough that it would hit the scope? The cheek weld is alright, I would prefer it to be a bit higher though.

You would prefer what to be a bit higher? The scope or the stock? One millimeter is plenty of clearance. You can raise the comb slightly with some of that adhesive sorbathane stuff. Regards, Bill.

I would prefer the scope rings to be higher (resulting in the scope being higher), the scope is about 1mm at its lowest point away from the barrel. The picture does not do it justice of how close it really is.
