Couple Questions on Scopes and Rings

Just bought a Leupold Vari-X 111 3.5-10x50 scope for my Savage build and have a few questions.
The rifle is a model 111 in 30-06, soon to be a 338-06AI with the McGowan prefit magnum contour barrel.
I would like to use the Talley Lightweights, but not sure what height to order with the slightly larger than stock barrel and the 50mm scope (and flip up covers). Pretty sure I will need the extended rings as well, but not 100% positive. Anyone know for sure which rings I will need?

As for the scope itself (this is my first Leupold), I am planning on getting one of the elevation dials installed when load development is done. A friend recommended the TTC knob from Kenton Industries, while others like the custom dials from Korth group. Are there any noticeable difference between the two (height of the installed knob, etc), quality, etc? Any warranty issues going with an aftermarket dial?

Also with the elevation dials, is there a happy medium for the altitude, temp, etc? I live on Van Isle, but hunt up in the interior as much as possible. Will it make much of a difference on a 350-400 yard (MAX) shot?
 
You might find the Talleys a bit tight for the tube length of the Leupold given the length of the receiver. I went through this mounting a Rifleman to a buddy's Stevens 200 30-06 and the Weavers that his wife had me order wouldn't work. In a panic I was going to use the Talley LWs off my 200 but on measuring then they still would have been too far apart for the body of the scope.

Measure the length of the main tube between the bells and double check the spacing of the Talleys. If I remember I'll measure mine when I get home.

Thanks, will measure the scope when it gets here (just got mailed yesterday). Would be appreciated if you could measure the ring spacing for me.
If the Talleys don't work, can anyone recommend a good quality set? Every rifle I've bought in the past has already had rings/bases installed, so honestly don't know a whole lot about them.
 
I had the same issue mounting my VX-II 3x9-50 on my Savage 116 in 30-06. I went with a 20 MOA rail to solve the spacing issue. The rings are Leopold med. The bell clears but it is close with the factory barrel.
 
Thanks for the info and measurements :)

Looked at the Talley site and saw they have extended rings for the Savage that should work (hopefully?). Have a couple months to get it figured out as the barrel is still on order so will look into the other options mentioned as well.
 
Talley probably got enough complaints about the problems with the Savage LA that they decided to offer a solution.

FWIW Leupold quotes the tube length of the 3.5-10x 50mm as 5.1" so I would preemptively order the extension rings. Depending on the barrel clearance you may be able to get away with the lows (they should give about 23mm of clearance from the top of the action) but I'd be concerned that the objective would touch so you might want to go with the Mediums.

I shoot a 338-06. I also have a couple of sets of Kenton TTC knobs but they are for Zeiss scopes. They are a good knob, well made, accurate and took about a month to the door. You have to have your info down when you send it to them. They are nice people, talk with Rainer if you have questions regarding elevation ect. he'll answer all that for you. If I was staying to a 400yrd max, and hunting the interior, I'd go with a 3000' elevation and I don't think you'd notice the difference @ 400yrds. Being a Leupold scope I'd probably just go with Korth. You could always go 3" high @ 100 and stay in the game to almost 300 than start holding at the top of the back or a touch more for 400. Have fun with your new rifle.

Have been thinking the same thing. Don't really need the turret for the ranges I'm comfortable taking game at. Might put the scope on my 6.5-06 and have a target knob made for it, and use my Burris BDC scope for the 338. Should be able to get it dialed in close enough for hunting at reasonable ranges.
