I bought a moose hunting DVD and noticed the rifle hunters had what looks like duct tape covering their muzzles.I understand the reasoning behind this practice
but I'm wondering about pros and cons, or if anybody else does it?

I always wondered if it would change POA, so I never did it. It would be nice to not have to worry about getting snow in your muzzle.

A friend of mine tried it at the range and it made no difference in the grouping or point of impact of his rounds. Now he does it all the time, it is great for keeping the snow, twigs and bark out of your barrel.

You can buy little condoms that are designed to fit over the end of a rifle barrel. Rubber ballons can also be used.

I see a lot of barrels with damage at the muzzle because they have been fired with dust and debris in the barrel.

When firearms are stored standing up, dust accumulates in the muzzle, just like it settles on the front lens of your scope...when it gets so bad you notice it; rubbing that dust away with your shirttail damages the coating of the lens and affects the light gathering ability of the scope.

When you place your gun in and out of a soft case, dust accumulates in the muzzle.

If the rifle is fired with this dust in it, it has the effect of lightly sandblasting the bore in the area with the dust. It accelerates the wear and affects the accuracy eventually.

I inspect the bore of my rifle and then cover the muzzle with either a layer of masking tape or a layer of electricians tape and I use lens covers on my scope.

A taped muzzle protects the bore and point of impact does not change.

As previously mentioned you can wrap a little extra replacement tape around the barrel.

I use black electrical tape and have done it for years.......when I was guiding I carried my gun for a couple months taped up...and now on every hunt I make sure I keep em taped....works great, doesnt affect POI.....

Go to your local pharmacy or drug store and ask them for "Finger Cots" they're latex "finger condoms" :) that fit perfectly over the barrel of any rifle/shotgun and no messy tape residue to deal with.

I've used black electrical tape for years to cover the barrel on anything up to .30 cal. Greater than that I've used "finger cots". No Ice, snow, mud, twigs, grass...nada gets in barrel.

The "air" being pushed in front of the bullet bursts the tape or "cot" before the bullet exits the barrel. Does not effect accuracy at all.

This really is a good hunting tip and has saved my hunts a few times. Put it this way...get stuff in the barrel...you have to stop and go clean it. Get stuff in the barrel and pull the trigger...you likely have a problem.
