I picked up a cow elk tag for 312 - west of High River .. one of many tags left over. The season is from late October until some time in November. I like hunting new country and have honestly never hunted in that zone before. (I have driven through there a few times in past years heading for the high country. ) Before I do the scouting trips .. any advice from folks who have some knowledge of the area ? Down south we often have problems with access .. and I was wondering how it might be so much closer to a town of a 1,000,(sheesh !) 000 people !!!???? :D Thanks !!!

Scruffy,
Your best chances on getting an elk are gonna be west of Longview. Get out the map and start making some calls and knockin on doors. Lots of elk if you can get some permission. The later season can be better at times, but you can find elk in November no problem if you're on the right spot. Permission is 'tight', but not impossible if you're a decent guy....

Good luck!

I"m at the N end of 312 and my friend called me the other day @ 8.00 am to tell me that there was a massive 6x6,8 sattelite bulls and some cows going through all the glamour of rut in pasture across from her place. The big bull was bugling, chasing off the little bulls and having his way repeatedly with the cows. I've seen about 6 elk myself this summer all in the same area but I think it will be up to locals with access to dispatch them come Novemeber (if they hang around) I'm out there helping with an over abundence of pork butt and liquor tonight so I'll snap some picks if there's light, elk and I'm still able to operate the camera.
