Cowboy Action Calibers

The fine metropolus of London

You should come out to Crumlin on Wednesday nights for a CAS practice. We're usually there from 6:00 to 8:00 as long as the weather is good. We can answer all your questions and you can try out some of our guns to see what you like.

.....and you can try out some of our guys to see what you like.

:D LOL... you may want to reword or correct your spelling before everyone jumps on the idea that cowboy shooters are left over extras from "Brokeback Mountain".... :D

Redneck, by all means go with the intention of strapping on some leather and shooting. I've yet to see any visitors, let alone interested new shooter folks, get past our shoots without the offer to try out the whole set of GUNS :D on a stage when there's a little down time.

I"m a member at Crumlin and I emailed via the website and did not get a response and last week I stoped by and didn't see anyone but I was there at 5pm so I was likely too early. I'll make a point of coming out next week.

Yeah, last week was cancelled and 5:00 is too early. Yes I know it's says that we have the range from 5:00 but nothing really starts until about 6:00. I'll let Mel know that sent an email. And by all means come by next Wednesday.

Can i use my Antique 10 shot C 96 Conehandled Mauser pistol in Cowboy action shooting :p

Well its more antique than most of the Rugers and other modern guns they alow it was made in 1897 has a RCMP letter stateing its antique and is a Semi Auto handgun some cowboys used them real south african cowboys.
I dont need a firearms licence to own it and no registration being as its a perscribed antique . gun can shoot to.... nice tight groups at 25 Yds give any SAA Colt a run for its money LOL

Sorry dingus, no go on the Mauser. The idea is to re-create the old west as it was found in the US while using firearms that make things equal for all. Hence the rule in the book that specifies single action guns.

Although for our monthly shoots there's a guy that comes dressed in an old British Army pith helmet and has a pair of Webleys in .455 strapped on his hips. He shoots them in SA mode just to stick to the SA only rules.

The only other category that does allow semi auto is the Wild Bunch. It's based on the movie of the same name and specifies an old style basic 1911 and Win 1894 shotgun along with the lever gun.

While there's no real category for the Mauser I'll bet that if you wanted to shoot it as a "walkthrough" or "one man category" sort of deal along with a rifle and shotgun in a club's low key monthly match no one would object. The trick would be to load no more than 5 off a stripper clip and then force an unloaded chamber condition before you holster. One of the CAS safety rules specifies no loads in any chamber sitting under a hammer or in front of a firing pin until targets are engaged.

No Worries i was only jokeing anyway id just bring my orignal antique second model schofield as it out shoots most guns i have and is SA.

Hey Dingus, Club level shoots would likely cheerfully let you shoot that Mauser in the Wild Bunch category. We've a young fella down here in Ontario that they let shoot an old Luger in Wild Bunch. As long as the Match Director likes old guns (and most do), at the smaller shoots its usually just a matter of asking. New & different=cool. Giver a try.

A couple corrections as it relates to Wild Bunch.

1) Traditional Wild Bunch is Mil style 1911.
2) Modern Wild Bunch allows 1911 to have a few embellishments.
3) It is an 1897 Winchester of clone pump shotgun.
4) The rifle is any SASS legal main match rifle, 40 caliber or bigger, so 1873, 1866, 1894 etc., and includes the Pump lightning.

Hey Dingus! I watched an old Clint Eastwood movie "Joe Kidd", with my sons, last week. Simms (bad guy) was using a C 96!!

Theres a new movie out called Tracker about a Boer war vet who moves to newzealand and ends up hunting down a Native down there with his mauser rifle and broomhandled pistol his was a large ring pistol the next one after the cone hammer but there very simlar.

Good movie to watch! so is Joe Kidd tho he has a modern mauser pistol in that movie shoulda been a conehammer as that movie was based on a 1897 date. guess they didnt have one so used a modern made c 96

Go to SASSnet.com, download the Shooters Manual which gives the list of acceptable firearms or I can just say NO, as .30 cal carbine was never a Cowboy cartridge and save you the time. Honestly if you are interested in the sport at all, download the manual in PDF format and it will answer all your questions.

And old 1911's still kick butt! At the Montana State Championships this last weekend , one of the side matches was a Wild Bunch Match. I took 3rd place in the Traditional category with a 1911 which was manufactured in 1914 and seen probably seen service on the Western Front with a Canadian soldier in 1915. Old is good! But the original front & rear sights do suck a lot!!!:)
