Now that I have the rifle and the revolver is on it's way, what does everyone say to a coachgun? I understand that CAS/SASS is particular in what shotguns you are allowed to shoot. What does everyone recommend?

I've heard that Stoger has some offerings, but that most prefer the Winchester shotguns. What models should I be looking for? What's readily available out there? I don't really want to spend a grand on this gun, but may spend up to half that.

Your wisdom and experiences are welcome and encouraged in this thread.

i have a norc coach gun the finish is't amazing but still a decent gun for cowboy shoots u can get them used just post a WTB

Definately will buy from a contribtor when the time comes.

Have you tried the Stoger? How do you like it? How does it handle? Any thing special that I should know about the gun? I know some have fixed chokes and some interchangeable. Which chokes are recommended for Cowboy Action?
 
Hadda Silverado, pretty nice little boom stick. Finish was good, worked flawlessly and the price was right. It wasn't the deluxe, so no screw in chokes. Modified and improved pipes if I remember correctly. Made the mistake of trying a double whammy with both pipes at the same time with #1 buck. I don't recommend it, put me on my ass. Everybody watching thought it was cool, but I've never felt kick like that before.
There's also plenty of info out there on how to slick them up etc. For the price, I'd recommend one.

So, I take it Stoger is a good Coach gun?

Anyone have any opinions on the old Winchesters? Any other coach gun out there? Let's hear from the Cowboys out there.
 
hey smith i'm not try to sell my gun lol just saying there decent by the way all the norinco stuff i have bought has been well worth the money!

Bigdawg, I'm glad you are happy. I'm not familliar with the brand. My local gun shop doesn't carry them. I've heard they are made in China, is that true? They are very representative of the arms they immitate, but the guy at the shop said they, along side the Baikal, were somewhat problematic and they weren't going to sell the Baikal after their current stock is finished.

So, all said, I've never held one to guage the feel, or the action of it. Hearing that you like yours gives me reason to go find one and get a feel for it.

The winchester 97 and Norinco clone 97 do work well with tuneing and lots of loading pratice. Best with stages of 5 or more shots and shooting through windows . That being said I have parked the 97 for a stoger coach gun with choke tubes .
WHY ? Cause most stages are going to 4 rounds shotgun ,I do not practice much , 97 can fail to eject if not stroked hard then loose 5 second clearing compared to 2 seconds to pull a hull from a double .
Chokes ? improved cylinder in both with winchester featherlites .carry a dozen 3 dram trap loads and modified chokes for small or tough knockdowns .

By tuneing you mean tweaking it, getting it set just right for the way you/I shoot? Sounds like that'd be more $$$ still....:(

Well, at my age, I can still stroke it hard enough, I just don't know for how long. :D Sounds like I may want to go to the SxS rather than a pump. I know when my 870 jams on an Upland hunt, it takes a good 5 -10 seconds to get the spent shell out of the chamber. Looks like I'm in for a good workout no matter what.

Ahh, the heart of the matter. There's a great piece of information. If the Match is moving to 4 rounds, then it's only one reload per round/station. With a SxS, that' can't be too hard.:)

So, in order to be proficcient with the 97, I'd have to spend dozens of hours and hundreds of shells to get good?:eek: Work uses me 60 hours a week, "Honey-do" list another 8, that leaves me 4 to practice with boom sticks.

Thanks, Vicious, I think you've helped me make up my mind. Let me hit a few matches this summer, speak to more folks like you and see what their opinion is, but I think it's a SxS for me. :dancingbanana:
 
I have a Stoeger Coach Gun in 12 Gauge. It's fantastic and only cost me 250.00 US (used). It's handled hundreds of rounds, it's easy to load and to fire. As for the Winchester models, there are two in CAS that are dominant: the 1897 Pump action and the 1887 lever action. I don't consider the pump action a "Cowboy" shotgun, but do consider the SXS and the lever action to be good examples from that era. However, the 1897 Winchester is SASS legal and that's all that matters. Pretty much any SXS without automatic ejectors will do the job for CAS.

Another vote for the SxS. Tell me, how many matches do you participate in every year? In your matches, how far are you expected to shoot the shotgun? Waht chokes do you use? IC? IM? Would you recommend that I get the Stoger Coach with interchangeable chokes or the one with fixed? (in other words, is it worth the extra $100?).
 
I found a Stevens 300 brand new and in the wax paper that I bought from Transport Canada (they had the in bush planes) for $200. Then for $50 had a gunsmith cut in down to 18.5.......great gun!
