Hey guys,

I am starting to piece together the necessary firearms and equipment to compete in Cowboy Action shooting. I am having a hard time finding a lever action rifle in .45 LC at a reasonable price as well as an external hammer 12 gauge shotgun (preferably pump action). If anyone has any advice or tips on where to look, your info would be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks All,

TangoSierra

Tango Sierra, we are in the same town, PM me and we will get together over coffee and discuss Cowboy Action. I shoot at least 15-20 Cowboy matches a year these days.

Grand will help you out. PM me here and I can let you know if I can find anything for you.... BUT go for a coffee with Grand and learn what you need. Then go to a match and try the things you think you want. Everyone there will be glad to help you out.
Welcome to CAS.
Regards, Doc

Medicine Hat has 2x2 day Cowboy Action matches a year. One the long weekend in May and the other the long weekend in October. Throughout the summer there will also be 4-5 "monthly" matches on Sunday afternoons. I shoot 4-5 matches a year across the border, those guys with the green and white "training" plates actually put on some good matches if you don't mind travelling.

Reasonable is relative.

You can get a Puma 92 in 45 Colt for around $550.00 to $650.00, very commo, order from your favorite store. You will eventually upgrade.

You can buy an Model 92 from Winchester for around $1000.00, nicer than the Puma? Not sure.

Uberti 1873 or 1866 in 45 Colt is your best bet as these can be slicked up real nice. $1300.00 to $1600.00.

If you want a pump rifle, you want a Davide Pedersoli Lightning in 45 Colt (not the Uberti one, it is finicky on ammo).

A pump action shotgun IS a Model 1897. These are harder to find. Norinco & Chaparral make them. You can also find some original Winchesters. Look on the Ontario Single Action Shooting Federation website in the classifieds section.

As far a break action, a lot of people use the stoeger/IGA coach gun. They slicken and smoothen up real nice. There are some hammered SxS's so just look around.

I usually tell newcomers to CAS, to at least attend one or two matches before they actually purchase any equipment. All of us have our PET firearms that we are comfortable with., but many have quickly purchased and then found some firearms don't function as well as others do for our particular sport. The inexpensive way is not always the best way. You are well advised to have coffee with Garand and do as much research as is possible before shelling out the cash.
