Was wondering about this shooting sport. All I know is what I've seen on tv. So not much. What calibers are used. Barrel length, if it matters. Also if there is any matches in the Edmonton area I could attend to watch.:D As this looks cool and a whole lotta fun. Thanks for any and all replies.:)

There is an active CAS club at Sherwood Park. Do a search for the Alberta Frontier Shootists, they have a huge match on th Aug. long weekend in Rocky Mountain House. Rite now everybody is here in Kamloops for the Palmers Gulch match.
Hope this helps.

Typically you'll need a lever action rifle, a shot gun and a pair of Single Action revolvers. All weapons must be of or a reproduction of weapons used pre 1900 or what are known as Cowboy Guns. In most cases the Rifle and the Revolvers are of the same caliber. The most common are .38Spl/.357Mag and 45 Colt but you'll also find 44/40 and a lot of others. As for the shotgun 3 models are used the winchester lever gun, the 1897 Pump and the SxS Coach Gun. In the Coach Gun you cannot have ejectors only extractors. There are no standards as far as barrel lengths whatever you like is what you should go with. A friend has a pair of Uberti 1875 Outlaws 71/2" in .357Mag. I shoot Ruger New Model Vaqueros 45/8" barrels also in .357mag, another shoots Rugers with 51/2" barrels in .45Colt. And then there's the costuming you basically dress in period clothes and adopt an alias mine is "Frenchy Cannuck".
The 1st piece of advise is go to a shoot you'll find that CAS Shooters are the friendliest and they will be very happy to have you handle and even shoot their guns. Once you've tried different guns and calibers you'll be in a position to decide what you like or dislike. Then spend some time on the exchange section of CGN you'll likely find what you need at a better price.
All I can say is get out there play safe and have fun. I garantee CAS is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!!!

Go to WWW. SASSnet.com and download the handbooks. These are the rules for SASS affiliated clubs and guidelines for club matches. They should answer all your questions in detail.

Another welcome to CAS from here in Ottawa.
All the above advice is good and sound.
CAS folks are helpfull and friendly.
Many posse's post pictures on their websites for others enjoyment and to introduce the fun.
Ours are on www.ovmcowboys.ca

"...the friendliest and they will be very happy to have you handle and even shoot their guns..." That applies to any kind of competitive shooting too.
"...a whole lotta fun..." So does that.
"...Rite now..." That'd be, "Rat naw, ya'll."
The CAS firearms are relatively easy and inexpensive. The clothing, not so much. A whole industry has blossomed around CAS shooting, including sewing patterns. Put on a cowboy hat, your blue jeans and go.
