If a man was to put the wheels in motion, to host a Cowboy Mounted Shoot
in the Southwestern Ontario Territory in the spring/summer of 2008
would anybody want to participate. I am just starting to train myself and my horse and think maybe some like minds might be interested.
Thoughts?

Cowboy Action Shooting

I saw the Cowboy Action Shooting Kentucky State finals a few years ago and it was impressive. The top level cowboys and girls were going through the course is as little as 19 seconds.
Some of the top shooters were over 60 and they rode like they had glue on their buts. They carried two six shooters with 5 rounds in each gun. They were supplied with the blank ammo as they rode up to the gate to go into the ring. They couldn't leave the ring until every shot had been fired, and returned the guns to be emptied and inspected.
It would be great to have the sport in Canada but the government would probably outlaw it, as cruelty to animals.

On a live horse? On a MOVING live horse?

Oh my gawd......

You just wait 'til the safety nazi's get ahold of this thread..........

It is a great sport, tried while in New Mexico. The riding aspect also brings a lot of women into the shooting sports. The one real challenge in Canada will be working thru the restricted part as typically you would really like to run the events in riding arenas and not at ranges.

Gentlemen

The sport of Mounted CAS is alive and well in BC. There is an active group in the Kamloops area. They were the opening act for the Musical Ride of the RCMP a couple of years back at the Merritt Music Festival. It's done in any are suitable for rodeo events; indoors or outdoors. One of the guys has even travelled to Australia for an event.
It's quite a learning curve for horse and rider. Breaking the horse to the sound of gunfire close to it's head isn't easily done. Shooting is the easy part.
That's why some of the best are ladies who were barrel racers first. Point shooting with a .45 BP blank is the easier skill to learn.
Send me a personal email and I'll pass along the contact info. They'll be glad to assist in getting it going for you.

Cowboy Action Shooting

The horses involved in the Cowboy Action Shooting in Kentucky had ear plugs hanging from their bridals. They looked like the small rollers used in painting only shorter. They would insert them into the horses ears just prior to going into the ring.

I'm a cowboy without a horse or a saddle, but I'd be interested in a CAS event! count me in!

Gives me a year to learn how to ride, and figure out where to put a horse here in the Big City (gives Mayor Miller a year to figure out how to tax it).

If you want (unmounted) CAS in Ontario great bunch that shoots all arround the place, and many clubs in the south have club matches, have fun. :

Thanks for replies so far,
and yes I know there is CAS shooting in ontario, have been to one or two.Hence my interest in CMS
I have had time to rethink my approach and find I was maybe looking at it A backwards. Most likely I would be looking at convincing people who already have horses to learn to shoot/ride as oppposed to convincing someone who has the guns to get a horse and learn to ride.
In any case this in itself would make it a worthwhile adventure bringing in a new group of folks into the firearms community.

Thanks again

How do Canadian mounted shooters get around the restrictions for handguns regarding transport to ranges only and discharging at locations that are not approved gun ranges?
