Cowboy shooting in Prince George

We use a simple rolling gong with a large plate. It is activated by a knockdown and works on gravity. It is reset with a pull rope. The AFS has a real neat moving target that is electrically operated and triggered. It is easier to keep perfectly regulated but more complicated and expensive. I have shot both systems many times and both seem to work well, with very few problems as long as the posse members do their jobs.

Cool :)

I like movers.

Curious what the most common setup is for rifle targets. Same size plates 16" but farther out??

My eyes are not that great on open sights anymore. Small targets are a nogo for me.

I was going to run open sights on my AR for multigun until I found out I couldn't see the clay birds at 50 m.

Most of our rifle targets are 16" squares, and we usually set them at around 20 yards, however we have some playing card cutouts that are a bit smaller, and we usually set them in a little closer. Our rolling gong is a 2 foot plate, last year it was engaged with a revolver at any where from 20 to 10 yards, at the shooters discretion. The gong could be engaged after activation by a handgun knockdown with your other 4 handgun rounds. The shooter was awarded a 2 sec bonus for every hit on the moving gong. Any shooter that was uncomfortable shooting the mover could shoot at the 5 targets that they engaged with their first revolver. I think everyone tried the rolling gong.

This is great news, all I need is some leather and I'm ready. I've been looking forward to getting into cowboy action for some time so have the basic guns ready. This just made my week!

A good portion of our match fees go towards purchasing more steel and other range inprovements.
In addition to the stationary steel targets, we have purchased swinging targets, including ones activated by striking a release plate, pop can launchers for cowboy shotgun and part of stages,(the device must be struck with the first shot, which launches the pop can, which then must be shot. Great fun!!) remotely re-settable plate rail stands, on removable wheels.
We keep our eyes open for other types of reactive targets, especially those that either reset themselves or can be reset remotely. Something that becomes important as the number of shooters at a match increases, creating a need for speedy re-setting.

The latest target we use is a reactive steel plate with a sensor which activates an automatic clay thrower. One shot on the plate and the second at the bird. We can change the time interval between hitting the plate and when the bird is thrown. Tons of fun.

Well it is official

The Prince George Rod and Gun Club now has a Cowboy shooting section.
Monday night was the AGM and two Directors of the new section where voted in.
Don and John are the two directors and hope to have a meeting out at the range in April to get to meet any and all area Cowboy shooters.
Looking for range setup ideas and any help we can get.

Hey Don this is good to hear. The wife and I have been very involved with SASS for a number of years now.We are playing with the Idea of putting some clinics on here in the Houston area to try and get people involved with cowboy action.
If we can we are more than willing to help out.I do have a some steel targets and also have my RO2. The wife is an active shooter and would be more than willing to let any ladies try out her guns.We also very much enjoy the costume part of CAS.The wife is always sewing something together, and could set something up with all her Ball gowns and saloon girl outfits, something that would attract the ladies. In fact SASS has the largest percentage of women than any other shooting sport partly due to them being able to dress up.Let us know when you start shooting.
Don't squat with your spurs on!

Now I have to start thinking up a SASS name :) I'd love to show up in a bear hood just like the bear man in my avatar. It would be a bit hot in the summer I'm afraid *LOL*
