Right forum?...i think so...must be..

ANYWAY

I'd like to pick up a lever action rifle, and maybe also a lever action shotgun,

the shotgun isn't a huge deal as I know which one i'd like,

as for the rifle, I don't know much,

I basically just collect and shoot occaisionally, so I'd like something with some "period appeal" to it.

I'd like a non-restricted one, and a make (or clone of a make) that was common or is considered typical for the gold rush period or whatnot,

as for caliber, .45lc, 30-30, etc, it isn't super important which as far as period accuracy is concerned, moreso i'd like it to be chambered in the most common and inexpensive of the bunch (and commonality is more important than price, hence the occaisional shooting)

I'd finally like it to be fairly inexpensive,
as I said above, I'm not against getting some sort of clone or reproduction, I'm always looking for collector peices, and shootable collector peices (in which case clones are fine)

SO!
Could anyone throw me a few suggestions as far as makes and models?

(additionally, I just love the way case-hardened finishes look)

and of course, if you have something you'd like to part with that isn't very expensive, feel free to toss me a PM (for either a lever rifle or a lever shotgun)

(just remember, non-restricted's only as I like to shoot on crown land)

thanks for any info !
:D

For a levergun you can't beat a Marlin....a '94 for Pistol type cartridges... or the larger version. You don't say whether you will use it for Cowboy Action, as this has rules as to cart. length etc. The Stoeger doubles from brazil represent an inexpensive investment and seem to work okay.

marlin firearms are easy to take apart to clean, & also desirable...

these are 1894's in .357 & .44 mag. if i could find one in .45 colt, i'd have it too. both rugers are also .44 mag....

Winchester 73, or '92 for the pistol Calibers.
The Winchester '94 if you want a 30-30.
Why Winchetsre?
Because in the cowboy era, Winchester had better than 70% of the market.
Winchester was the cowboy's choice.

Yes JYC but that was a long long time ago, back when Winchester made a good rifle. Now adays we have Marlins :p

For Period appeal there is no other Rifle then the 1873 Winchester in 44-40 it was the Rifle that one the West
Obviously originals are getting scarce and most are only up to the task of original BP loads anyways;)

Uberti makes an Excellent 73 Clone, they are very well made and Dam pretty to look at too. I've seen used ones for as low as 800 bucks in mint shape..i think new ones are running close to 1500 now.

If your getting into the sport of Action shooting with old stuff, remember the rules on loads , their are some resrictions on velocity etc..?? Marlin make fine cowboy guns, so does winchester.
Check a club out first , may find info , or what your looking for on site.
Enjoy, :)
