Hi I am trying to develop a load for Coyotes. I have a Savage 16FCSS with a 22in. Barrell. I have ran a few boxes of factory ammo through and have had mixed results. The Federal Power-Shok 55gr. SP was the best shot fairly consistant. The Winchester cheap white box 45 GR JHP came in second did as expected for cheaper stuff. The Hornady 55Gr. V-Max shot TERRIBLE.

Where do I start for load development
I am willing to experiment as much as I have to
I want a hard hitter with minimal damage and maximum range (Coyote/Wolf/Beavers)
What Bullet weight? 1:12 Twist
Bullet Type?
Powder sugestions?
Recipes?
Thanks

I liked the 52g HPBT and a good dose of IMR4064, or Varget. I reloaded for 3 .22-250's and 2 of them liked Varget best and the other 4064. All rifles did around 1/2" groups at 100 yards. We tried some 50g Vmax bullets, but found that a lot more damage was done to the pelts.

+1 on the Varget and IMR4064,for powders
I like the Hornady 55 SP(with cannelure) in my 22& 1/2" barrel,they shoot great.MOA or better at 200.
The 52 HP shot very well too,but I wasn't happy with the results on coyotes, they were unpredictable.

I've heard many people say they've had god luck with Varget, but I've yet to try it yet. My favorite load is 50 gr. Hornady SP, Remington cases, Remington 9 1/2 primer, and a good dose of IMR 3031. My load was a grain over max, and it shoots great in my rifle. If you're interested in the load, PM me and I can give more details. Good luck, Eric

50/55 gr.Sierra Blitzkings over IMR 4064 with CCI BR2 primers in my .22-250.My Swift also likes the same recipe except a tad more powder.

The best pelt saving bullet that I've found for the '250 is the 52 gr Berger Varmint Match. My current load for my Kimber is 34 grains of IMR 4895, CCI Benchrest primers and Nosler Brass. The 50 Grain Berger works about the same, pick whatever shoots best.

For accuracy my savage with 1/12 twist really likes the sierra 63 gr. semi points over 36.5 gr H380. I've shot a quite a few yotes with this setup and pelt damage is about the same as with my 55gr blitzkings. I find this load to be incredibly accurate further down range.

I also really like the 55 gr. blitzkings over 33.5 gr of IMR 4895. At around 3550 fps these are my fav varmint round.

If you really want to save pelts you might want to try barnes varmint grenades I haven't tried them personally but have heard good things.

I have shot 52gr SMKS for mosty of my varmint hunting pushed by IMR 4895!

Just started fooling with Varget in the 22-250 but its to early to tell if it will be a home run.

there is no doubt any bullet will work on a small animal at 3500 fps

have used 38.5 gains of h380 with 52g hp speers in w/w cases for yodel dogs for years, but is hard on the pelts, mabey try the speer 52g bt hp-match bullet for smaller exit wound.the h-380 has usually been a consistant benchmark performer in my 22-250, and is always in stock at the gun shops

Varget or H380, I use berger 50 gr match bullets for yotes, haven't connected on any yet as I just bought them in the spring. They should work fairly well if my calculations are correct. I have 55 gr Sierra Gamekings that would work well for coyotes as well, but I think the berger match bullets will be far better to limit pelt damage! I also load 55 gr blitz kings from Sierra for prairie dogs and squirrels and such, turns em to dust!
