Coyote advice please

What has said applies. I would try and find where they are crossing fence lines and use traps or snares. With the snares/traps you are hunting 24 hr day. If you use snares be careful not to catch local dogsetc.

DO NOT HUNT DOWN WIND!! HUNT A CROSSWIND.

The Coyote will always use the wind, if it is a north wind, they will come from the south, you should hunt the east or west depending on where they are coming from as they will circle if need be.

Stake out a water source nearby? I've not done this personally, but the bit of advice came to me as highly recmmended - for what that's worth...;)

I really have spent a good deal of time with this website, so you may wish to take a peak:

He's got a bunch of recorded calls, too, so...happy hunting!

Edit - BTW, that guy uses a .243 to hunt 'yotes:

...just saying...okay, fine, whatever...:)

if it was me I would sit concealed, downwind. Every 30-45 minutes I would play a short series of pup distress, kitten cries, or similar non aggressive sounds. No rabbit or fawn distress, and no howling.

Good luck and shoot straight!

Agree 100%.While calling/hunting yotes is fun,it's not nearly as effective as trapping for serious predator control.Chances that you will actually shoot the problem yote(s) before they wise up and go completely nocturnal are pretty slim IMHO.A good trapper could potententially take care of the problem in one night with a dozen good sets if he's lucky and snaps the dominant coyotes right away. They're much easier to shoot from 3 yards while held fast in a #2 coil,LOL.

I absolutely agree that nothing compares to a trap or snare for full time, 24 hour a day, most effective method of coyote control. However, is that even an option this time of year? I know that here in Newfoundland, trapping is only open during the fall and winter months.

If the same or similar seasonal limits apply where phinton81 is, is there an exception for farm/ranch pest control he can take advantage of?

SOL on the trapping. Owner wants nothing to do with it. Too many animals on the property, not too mention pets and what not. Its calling and shooting, and likely a great deal of waiting. Other than that, should be an interesting experience. Heading to the range on saturday morning to get sighted in. I will let everyone know how I make out, and pics for sure if I connect on something. Thanks for the advice everyone,

Patrick

Lonesome howl, interrogation howls, and pup distress will work this time of year. As mentioned, set-up for a cross wind depending on where you think they will come from. Try to be set up so that they have to come within 100 yds. to identify the source of the sound. Often as soon as they can see directly to the source of the sound, they will not come any closer.

Anybody checked out any dvd's on calling? I bought a call thats supposed to do all the dog calls but am not sure if whats coming out sounds anything like a coyote:redface: Only heard them howling during the winter. Had the bait sitting for almost a week but no signs of activity.

bait, big enough that they can't just carry it away, check it bright and early as they might still be feeding on it.

you can play the waiting game, it might be a long wait though.

teach her how too shoot.

set a dog on them and finish them off with a rock or club like my neighbour does.

I don't think calling will work well for you, this time of year. Try ambusing them but chances are they will come in downwind so be careful how you set up.

I disagree....calling works awesome. Get some videos or DVD's. I've become so hooked on calling that when I hunt with my Hutterite bud. I do the calling, he shoots. I'm so hooked on calling and baiting that when we team up, I don't even bring my rifle. A good dog is the best bait bet for the summer months. My dog wonders off, when I call him back, he comes back and brings the 'yotes back with him. It does take some training with the dog, but boy, does it work. I recommend a DVD called "Predator Terminator". Good luck to you. :)
