Halton police shoot coyote after 8-year-old girl bitten
Oakville Beaver

OAKVILLE Halton Regional Police killed the coyote that chased two young girls and bit one of them on the leg Thursday afternoon near an Oakville home.

Two friends, 7 and 8, were playing in a backyard just before 4 p.m. near Canonridge Circle when a coyote from the Greenbelt area behind the property jumped over the fence and approached the girls, Staff Sergeant Murray Drinkwalter said.

The two girls ran towards the residence, but as they reached the patio door, the coyote bit the eight-year-old on one of her legs, he said.

The girl’s wound was not serious and she was not transported to hospital at the time. Her parents have said they may take her to the hospital or family doctor later, Drinkwalter said.

Halton regional police officers launched a search for the coyote in conjunction with the Oakville and Milton Humane Society and the Ministry of Natural resources. When a coyote approached one of the Halton police officers, it was shot, police said.

The tracking teams found and shot the coyote because, police said, officers considered it a threat to public safety.

Several prints were found in the area, and Halton police are requesting citizens to remain vigilant when walking near forested areas.

The report of the attack on the child follows a series of reports of coyotes attacking dogs in North Oakville in the past weeks. On Jan. 10, a small dog was snatched and killed by a coyote near its home in northwest Oakville, while on Jan. 11 another survived an attack in the same area.

Police however can not be certain the coyote they killed was involved in any attacks on pet or the alleged attack on the young girl.

Whether they can't do that.. I think shooting that one was justified. I can only presume they were looking in the area nearby where it happened. And most importantly, the coyote that was shot approached one of the officers (no fear of humans).

I've had coyotes run like hell when spooked/make someone out. And more brave ones still stay a safe distance (at least they thought so) while watching.

I was at a KFC in the GreaterTorontoArea in August 2011 that had a dozen pussy cats outside. Apparently people had been feeding the little feral cats. When I mentioned this to the store owner, he commented that he didn't like it because there are coyotes in the area that were eating dogs, and cats, and eyeing babies. Someone official had been warning homeowners, storeowners, and construction workers in the area.

bahahaha some of those comments are retarded...lol dragging it by its tail is somehow tasteless? that yote looks to be in the 35-40lb range...what do they want the cop to do carry it like a baby?? through the snow and ice? Get the #### over yourself.

At least the comments of those ignorant posters are mostly harmless. Less than a year ago we had a total gong show around High Park when a bunch of locals turned converged upon a fatally wounded deer that had been struck by a car. What should have been a quick and humane dispatch of a wounded animal was delayed for hours as the police tried to contact a vet on a Sunday morning and control the crowd that likely only further stressed out the animal as they tried to "help."

My mom told me this then she threw in that wolves were friendly as well. Also said that we shouldnt be shooting them because they look pretty. f:P:

Ask your mom if it was a crazed man who attacked the girl and bit her, but he looked like David Hasselhoff (or what ever male is considered good looking these days), should the police still not intervene? "oh it's okay, he's cute"

It's not about cute and cuddly, it's about the bottom line; Public safety

Coyotes with no fear/respect for humans need to be tested for rabies, and this is especially so for those that bite people. Hopefully this is being dealt with???

Wait a minute, I thought city coyotes were cute and cuddly and need to be saved and protected? :D

They are. ;)

Agree but we are seeing a totally different breed of coyote down here. Bigger, bolder, running in packs, eating their own and zero fear of man.
Not to be trusted for a minute Not anything like I have seen over the years including out west. take care

I have friends that live down by the beaches in Toronto and they have deer that regularly visit their back yard to eat their hostas and shrubs, plus they have a family of red foxes that get rid of the pesky squirrels ... so it seems people are not the only city dwellers :)
