Coyote cal.

If buying ammo is an issue,

get a stevens 200 in 223, you can't go wrong...
Or the Stevens 200 in 22-250... accurate guns for a good price. I'm probably getting one in one of these calibres.
Put a decent low light scope on it, though...

.222 Rem is what I have and would not have a problem shooting coyotes with it, this gun has had 5 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards you could cover with a dime. The gun is an older Remington 700 BDL, it has killed a lot of groundhogs and I would not hesitate on the farm to use it for yotes. If I were hunting wolf up north or the larger coyotes farther north I would pull out the 6.5x55mm, I am going to load up for 100gr rounds and see what she can do this summer.

All my coyote hunting has been done with a 223,except a few i shot with K-hornet.Had no problems putting them down with the K-hornet but like the 223 for the extra reach.

Better check those ballistics again. ;) :p

He who laughs best, laughs last. Your earlier post referred to ACCURACY, not velocity! :D

All of the small caliber varminters tend to be quite accurate. Of those mentioned in this thread, the .22-250 and .204 are probably top of the league.

The 223 will beat them both easily.

I really like the idea of having a calibre that you can hunt big game with if you so choose. The 243 won't damage pelts with the right size lead so this would make my choice very easy. I have seen a lynx go down to a 7-08 and not have an exit so The idea of reloading would be factor. If you are going to, then big caliber, small bullet. If you want to shoot cheap 223, and buy ammo by the 200 round lots. Of course I say this and then went and bought a 22-243 middlestead. " hypocritical??" But most of my yote hunting is done with a 25-06 and 75gr v-max. Just my 2 cents

My Rem 700 ADL in .223 is an excellent rifle for my way of predator hunting. I don't really need to take 400 yard shots so the .223 serves very well indeed. Now if barrel stretching was the game, I'd be taking a look at the .204 Ruger for the "cool" factor or something like the .257 Weatherby Mag when the "need" for a super long shot arises...KF

I'm not talking about downrange velocity and energy, I'm talking about accuracy.

Wind drift becomes a big issue with the 22 calibers, even more so with the slower ones like 222/223.

This is a huge factor if you are shooting at Coyotes at long range.
I quit using the .22 centerfires years ago for this reason... the .243 is one of the best at bucking the wind!

That's cool, because I'm talking about accuracy too.

We'll have to agree to disagree. The .204 is inherently more accurate than the .223, especially beyond 300 yards. (I own both). The .204 was made to buck wind, and will challenge any .22 centrefire for accuracy. :D

Can't disagree with that. We can't use a .243 here, unless you happen upon a yote while caribou hunting. :(

I'm all for the 25-06 myself, when I was looking for a coyote / smaller caliber gun I wanted something that I could use on deer and even moose in a pinch. the 25-05 can be loaded with 120grn for game and loaded down with 75grn for yotes, balistics are good and the heavier bullets carry well.
